June baddaBOOM Darlins!
Happy Pride month honeys of all shapes, sizes, identities and orientations! June has started and she’s… magnificent. So far it’s been gloomy outdoors here (Narmee Dynasty always said, "June glooms bring July grooms” so, men on the verge of commitment, REJOICE and get your fingers ring-ready!) But inside the walls of the Dynasty, the sun has been shinin’ as brightly as e’er. We closed out May with some real gems, including ADAM SANDLER’s shows (he’s still got it!) and THE WORKJUICE PLAYERS serving up an amazing make-believe complete with Criminal Mind's KIRSTEN VANGSNESS’ reoccurring role as an immortal tequila worm (typecasting WORKS, Hollywood!) We also had our first (of many?) Daddy-themed romantic RPG event with audience members dressed in Dad cosplay. We’d go on, but that was a pretty evocative last sentence, and truly we’d rather leave the details up to your very skilled imaginations.
Friday night we enjoyed a double-header evening of comedy from the Everything’s Great Crew (DEMI ADEJUYIGBE, NICK KOCHER & ADDIE WEYRICH) and the boyz of BUTT (CHRIS STEPHENS and JOE MCADAM.) Then Saturday, it was JUNE! Saturday’s GO DAY was a success (come to the next one! Free, first Saturday of the month!) and we got career advice, writing tips, soulful guidance, and a monitor puppet lesson. It was wonderful to get inspired by our community, get reminded of the importance of play and failure, and eat ice cream. (Yeah, we ate ice cream.) Saturday night’s Dynasty Tonight! was a THRILL, with the whole lineup delivering magical performances (especially the magician) and with the added bonus & bragging point of it being the first show MARGARET CHO wore her dog onstage for. That’s right, a beautiful 3 pound chihuahua named Lucia had the best seat in the house on Margaret’s hip. Sunday’s preview of JACQUELINE NOVAK’S Get On Your Knees was amazing, and if you get a chance to see it DO. Also you might get a chance to see it realllll soon! Which brings us to THIS marvelous week!
TONIGHT we’re a movie theater, baby! We’re so excited to screen SHELF LIFE, the never-released, undiscovered final feature film from legendary director PAUL BARTEL. This film went unreleased, but the 35mm negative was discovered just in time for the 25th anniversary. Join us to watch it, and to enjoy a Q & A led by darling JOHN EARLY with special guests/co-stars/ co-writers O-LAN JONES, ANDREA STEIN and JIM TURNER.
WEDNESDAY we’re hosting Food For Thought: a conversation about access, affordability, and equity in the food system. Brought to us by MOTHER JONES and FOOD TANK, you’ll get to hear from some of today’s leaders in food, chefs, restauranteurs, advocates AND some very special guests… including, FRAN DRESCHER. (WE KNOW.)
THURSDAY we hope you’re in the mood for moods, because we’ve got two shows serving them up in big, musical ways. At 8pm it’s Every Place I Cry, the improvised emo concert with a live band and four lead singers you know and love (including OffBook’s JESS MCKENNA and ZACH REINO, Improvised Shakespeare’s ROSS BRYANT, and Duncanville’s NICK MANDERNACH). And then at 10, it’s Subtle Pride, an improvisational voice band bringing their hyper original pop music to LA for the first time, following a sold-out run in NYC! And they say if you can make it in New York City you can make it ANYWHERE so just imagine what they’ll do at the Dynasty!! The group is comprised of MISHA BROOKS (Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) ZACH DONOVAN (Waif Magazine), MINA WALKER (Daisy the Great) and we’re very excited to see BRIGETTE LUNDY-PAINE (who we loved SO much on Netflix’ Atypical.)
Did you love the cool music stuff you read about for Thursday? GOOD! You’re properly whetted for the rest of the weekend! FRIDAY we’ve got two events, the first of which is GREG BEHRENDT’s show, The King Sweater. Come celebrate The King Sweater’s vainglorious (HIS WORD NOT OURS) career in music and cosmetics in this comedic fever dream. Then, the fever dream melts into a wild ride with PODCAST: THE RIDE, live! It’s a show about theme parks with the MOST qualified hosts… three childless men in their thirties. We’d tell you more great things, but it would just break your heart because this show is SOLD OUT.
SATURDAY we’ve got TIM HEIDECKER & His Very Good Band’s Record Release show! We love music, we love Tim, and we love not knowing what’s real and what’s completely made-up, so we’ve been looking forward to this for a long time. And, ladies and gentlemen and folks of all folkness, we just announced a 10pm show for that evening… CLOWNVIS. He’s more than a Clown Elvis…. he’s our FAVORITE Clown Elvis, he’s the King of Clowns, and we’re longtime fans. If you haven’t seen him perform, PLEASE COME because you will fall in love, and if you HAVE seen him perform, you probably stopped reading and went to get tickets because you couldn’t wait and you’re so excited and we get it. He’ll be bringing a lineup of some of his friends, who we’ll announce as this week unfolds like the flower she is. SUNDAY, it’s ELENI MANDELL’s record release party! Wake Up Again is Eleni’s 11th studio release, and we cant wait to hear her perform pieces from the album! Adding to the joy will be sets from two of our favorite performers, RON LYNCH and BRENT WEINBACH.
yours in dreamin', schemin', and fightin’ demons,
vanessa and jamie
