January is nearly at her end, and we have to say… it’s been the best start to a year since 2020! So good, in fact, we’re absolutely terrified of what will happen next. But before we move into the unknowns of 2023, we can have some good ol’ fashioned revelin’ in what we do know!

WHAT WE DO KNOW:

We had a flarpin’ great weekend here at Dynasty. RACHEL BLOOM’s show was incredible, MEGAN STALTER last night reminded our room why she’s on a meteoric rise, and THE LAST IMPROV SHOW with IKE BARINHOLTZ as guest monologist delighted the night with a drop-in guest improvisor… SETH ROGEN. Casual Seth Rogen drop in? DELIGHTFUL. Missed it? Awww, don’t despair! We had 4 cameras on it! So,get a ticket and watch the livestream thru Friday! Their next guest on MONDAY FEB 13 (Valentine’s eve! Don’t forget to put your teeth under your heart shaped pillow!) is KUMAIL NANJIANI and there are just a feeeew tickets left!

We’re so excited to have TIG NOTARO and CHERYL HINES do a special LIVE episode of their podcast at the theater! Each episode dives into a different documentary, this one will center around The Last Blockbuster. Bust yer block and watch it at home!

WEDNESDAY is the first day of Febroorariay, a month of (among other things) lurrrrrve . What better way to kick off love month than with a little ol’ fashioned face-suckin’. At 7:30PM it’s SOPHIE SUCKS FACE! With special guest RACHEL BLOOM! We’re thrilled to host SOPHIE ZUCKER’s first West Coast performance of Sophie Sucks Face after a sold-out run at Soho Playhouse. It’s a one-person show and musical that’s got it all: love, incest, the widowhood effect and American-Israeli relations. ALMOST SOLD OUT!

THURSDAY at 10PM JAMIE WOLF and LUCAS ZELNICK Do Stand-Up Comedy in LA and there are very few tickets left!

SATURDAY DAN MINTZ (Yes, TINA BELCHER from Bob’s Burgers. But also so much more. Including but not limited to these events.) is putting on two shows! The first is sollllld out, but we’ve got some room at 10:00PM, so treat yourself! <Insert Tina dance gif here.>

4:20PM (lol) it’s DOUG LOVES MOVIES! With KUMAIL NANJIANI and RIKKI LINDHOME. We’ve loved DOUG BENSON’s movie podcast forever, and we’re flarpin’ thrilled to get to host it live at Dynasty! Also, these GUESTS! We’ve loved KUMAIL since his Meltdown days and RIKKI had us in the palm of her hand since her hand was pluckin’ for Garfunkel and Oats, and now they’re both like, stars of the screen! That’s some showbiz magic! Isn’t it the best when hard working brilliant people get the brilliant careers they deserve? We love that.

Then at 7:30PM it’s UNTITLED IMPROV PROJECT! The PATRICK COTNOIR-produced weekly improv show doesn’t even need a title. He puts together line-ups of the heaviest hitters and lightest-hearts that’re guaranteed to use their delightful minds to make things up that delight you. That’s what we call a healthy transaction. Middle aged dads Ken Marino and David Wain are professionals in the comedy world AND amateur musicians! They’ve been rocking out in the garage and now we’re all invited to join the fun. They play a wide range of songs from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, along with the rest of the band (Frank Barrera, Jon Spurney, Eduardo Penna, Henry Wain and Jordan Katz) and special guest singers. They may not have pro musical chops, but they more than make up for it in enthusiasm and pro-level funny banter in between songs! WIth Special Guests Beth Dover, Jackie Tohn, Natalie Morales, Mather Zickel, Craig Wedren, Joe Lo Truglio, and Meggan Lennon.

Happy Lunar New Year! We’re hoppin’ over here after a wonderful weekend of shows. HOW wonderful? Flarpin’ QUITE wonderful. Friday’s Dynasty Tonight! was a sparkling gem of an evening, with a beautiful BRETT GOLDSTEIN shimmering, shimmering, shimmering. Creepy? Sorry! Wanna know the creepier thing? Vanessa shook his hand backstage and somehow only grabbed 2 fingers of it! And kept shaking it like that was normal! Yuck and apologies. (Jamie got a 3 finger grip and only cherishes it.) Saturday was ANOTHER Dynasty Tonight! full of unexpected magical moments. Surprise drop-ins from CRAIG ROBINSON and REGGIE WATTS and they and BRENT WEINBACH all made beautiful music with our ever growing house band The Dy-Nasties! Note: DEBRA DIGIOVANNI remains a queen and a gift to us all, and thanks to all the other headliners who took the stage for our beloved DT. Last night we had a HANKS in the house with a stellar Untitled Improv Project featuring COLIN HANKS, LAUREN LAPKUS, CONNOR RATLIFF and more, still available to stream through Tuesday! The show is known for attracting famous guests and only selecting performers that the organizers truly love and admire, both as artists and individuals, in order to provide the best possible experience for its audience. The special guests for this edition of the show included Brett Goldstein from Ted Lasso, Langston Kerman from Bust Down, Frankie Quiñones from Creeper, Jenny Yang from The Great North, and Candice Thompson from The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, among others. First and foremost, a brief FUMBLE BRAG from your maybe favorite venue in LA for comedy, music, and enchanting experiences. What’s a fumble brag? It's when you’re so bad at bragging you wait to brag until you simply pass the point of relevance. (Ok, Ok, ONE IS ACTUALLY STILL RELEVANT!)(Ok, they all kind of are, but you see the humble game we're playing here.)

We got a lil’ write up in the LA TIMES a couple weeks ago about our upcoming 5 year anniversary celebrations this March! (Let this be the first seed planted about our upcoming trip 5 year anniversary celebrations this March!)

We got mentioned by The LA TIMES last week as one of the best things to do in Los Angeles when it's raining! It’s no longer raining! But maybe that doesn't matter because...
TimeOut picked us as THE TOP place in LA to see comedy!! (Last year? )
Finally, for those of you who didn't make it the Clifford reunion show with MARTIN SHORT in December, Vulture did an in-depth review of the magical night with pictures of MARTIN SHORT on our stage!

We didn’t get the weather we wished for, but we flarpin’ "got what we got and we not got upsot!" We DID get the shows we wished for. If anything calls for a “BOY HOWDY!," this past weekend’s shows did. Boyyyyy howdy, they were good ones. LAUREN LAPKUS’ show name promised “A Very Good Time” and we can boots on the ground tell ya: it motherflarpin' delivered. (Still avail to watch for 4 days!) Sunday’s SOLD OUT Middle Age Dad Jam Band with DAVID WAIN and KEN MARINO had the vibes of being at a show for your favorite college band, but instead of toxic young musicians in the prime of their predatory life, it was your favorite comedians being total sweethearts. And instead of a sticky sticky bar floor and smushed stinky bodies, it was our sweet ol’ vintage scooty seats, with the proper amount of space for your well deodorized body because goddamit we’re not animals anymore! The classic rock… classic ROCKED us. And it was maybe the most people and the most plugs we’ve ever had on stage. And right after that, a quick turn around for an amazing Untitled Improv Project with Oooooscar winning MICHAEL GIACCHINO. (Available to watch for 4 more days!) If we could’ve given the show an Oscar WE WOULD HAVE. Take that, Academy. Shots fired?

VALENTINE’S DAY THOUGHT?
Destination (Wedding) Dynasty!
It has recently been reminded to our attention that both Van and Jam are certified officiants via the holy internet, and have officiated more than 12 wedding ceremonies between them. We also remembered we have a theater and instruments and we flarpin’ love love. Would you (or anyone you know) want to get SPED-WED at Dynasty?! On VALENTINE’S DAY (which is a Tuesday) If you would be interested in bringing yourself and your partner and your paperwork over to Dynasty, we could do a lil’ ceremony, have your first dance/ video karaoke on stage and give you an unforgettable 30 minutes. If you’d like to elope with us, let us know! Maybe we could even borrow Jamie’s mom’s new dog Morty and put it in an outfit or something. Or we know our GM Missy has access to one of those naked cats if that’s your thing. We haven’t asked Missy if her access to that cat gets us access, but we’ll figure it out. (Missy, do you read these? Can we borrow your friend’s cat?) Or no pets. What we know for sure, you’d get some good photos, have some good fun. And actually get married. If people want to do this, we’ll do this? Let us know! If not we'll do a movie screening or put on a show or something but that's so obvious. COME ON, LET US FLARPIN' MARRY YOU. Dripping Darlings,

As we say at the top of every single newsletter we send out, "We are complex creatures, holding multiple truths." For example, it is possible to both: feel deep gratitude for the rain Los Angeles is getting and low-boil frustration that this is not the weather we pay for . We know, we know, it doesn’t work like that and the sentiment is kinda gross, but it’s also gross when you find out areas of your home leak a lot and the landlord is like… “we’ll fix it when it stops raining” which is a tired song and dance we go through every year, because when it’s not raining they can’t fiiiind the leak. And this morning all the toothbrushes were wet, not from the spittle of cleaned teeth but from a steadily leaking, plump and pulsing breast-like bubble that sprouted on the bathroom ceiling this morning. But whether YOUR steadily leaking, plump and pulsing breast-like bubble is ALSO a steadily leaking, plump and pulsing breast-like bubble or something else that is pulsating to start this week, we can also acknowledge the truth that the drips are making us stronger, more resilient, and motivated to sell more tickets for shows and livestreams so there can be a housing upgrade sooner than later, are we right?

What we are trying to say for those still reading is ride your vibeeeees, friends.

Also, RANDO RANTO: After last week’s objectively very positive and loving newsletter we got one reply from a person who was mad that one of our shows was sold out and he said “This was the first I've HEARD [of this show] and I guess we’re not INTERESTED in reaching new AUDIENCES!” This email was… confounding? Because, uh, yeah, sometimes shows sell out really quickly! We announce our shows to our newsletter readers and post on socials, as do most of the artists. We, of course, DO want to reach new AUDIENCES but this person appears to... already be in our audience, and just didn’t procure tickets? Sorry? Anyway, we get all the emails and read all the emails and when we get them from ANGER PERSON it’s not very fun to engage, ignore, or console. So may we suggest, ANGER PERSON, that if you have a gripe (who doesn’t!) you think is worth sharing (often they are!) it would be amazing if you can first access the calm to couch the gripe in some sort of setting where we can get our footing and then help escort you into a more pleasant place. Or you could try a totally healthy skill set we’ve honed of composing a completely IRATE and IRRATIONAL email and then delete it, suppress your feelings, and slowly becoming more resentful and less trusting as the years go on. Having talked to other people who started businesses to shine their lights and bring joy to people, we can say that in most cases they feel the same way about ANGER PERSON. If you don't help us help you, we'll end spending time we could be using to make videos of singing pigs to publicly call you ANGER PERSON because once gain, this is our therapy, we guess. 🤷‍♀️

Happy New Year’s to our same dears! Wherever you fall on the New Year-New You spectrum, we hope this finds you in a place of contentment and general ok-ness. Last year was, like many, both great and not great… but we remain great-full for the journey and pleased to have such glad company for our glad company. We’ve resolved to live in a fuller, happier, less resistant, not as constantly overthinky way, ditching some of the rocks (boulders?) we’ve inadvertently been toting in our proverbial pockets and replacing them with… air? Lightness? Popcorn? We say, AOTA!™ (All Of The Above!) We encourage you to find and seek joy, be nice to people, and use your Turdometer 2023™ with abandon. What is the Turdometer 2023™? It’s your own, improved (because despite ourselves, we are all getting older and wiser every day) intuition situation. If something or someone seems kinda… you know, turdy? Trust your gut! Walk away. Flush ‘em. Keep your life bowl sparkling in 2023 by saying “Yuck, no thanks” to human and emotional turds. (By the way, "one human’s turd may be another human’s treasure," so just because you deem it flushable doesn’t mean it won’t be totally loved and accepted by someone else. Sweet darrrrrling darlins,

This is likely the last newsie of 2022. Can you even? We can’t, yet we must so we do. It’s been a largely delightful year at the theater, wonderful things a’plenty and a’plenty of growing pains resulting in a’plenty of growth. A moment to shout out our fabulous GM Missy Steele who joined the team by way of the wonderful Bob Baker Marionette Theater. Missy has been holding down the fort, beautifying the fort, and fortifying the fort since she joined us in September and we’re so grateful. If you see her at the theater (and if you’re at the theater, you will) give her a warm smile cuz honey she’s doing our Lord’s work. (We wouldn’t presume to know about your Lord and their workload…. But Missy’s probably helping them out too.)

Many many things have happened in 2022 and we’re feeling very optimistic about the new year, but hey! We also felt that way in 2019 and so… we know we are not psychics. But despite ourselves, we are optimists.

This weekend we had our first Terrifying Mannequin In Residence™! It was an honor though, as they were clad in Clifford’s costume from the movie, and MARTIN SHORT was in the building! A real deal comedy legend. What a dream. We hope our stage soaked up some of his aura but not enough to deplete him. He was joined onstage by RICHARD KIND (Mad About You, Curb Your Enthusiasm, A Serious Man) who we absolutely can’t get enough of. Lucky for us, we don’t need to because he’s back TOMORROW! Tonight is THE MARY TRUMP SHOW, but it’s totally sold out so we’ll save you the fomo-y details.

🧥 TUESDAY at 7:30 PM: In a just-added event we are thrilled to present WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION presented by RICHARD KIND and Hollywood Entertainment.
Richard will be presenting one of his personal favorite films, Billy Wilder’s Witness for the Prosecution. Dark! Witty! A courtroom classic featuring Tyrone Power and Marlene Dietrich, and Charles Laughton and more. Come soak up an old film in our old theater, while you make new friends and eat BRAND NEW popcorn. (Brand new because we pop it fresh for every show. GROUNDBREAKING, we know.)

Van in her kerchief and Jam in his hat, we’ll then settle in for a long winter’s nap.

But when we get up from that nap, honnneyyyyy! We gots schlip to DOOOO!

Here’s a few things we’re realllly lookin forward to in 2023! Get your tickets now and ensure you’ll start the year off right and keep that merry mood going. Or if you have holiday events you’re dreading these can serve as lights at the end of the tunnel.

Ding-dang Darlings,

Hello sweetie pies! Hope the holiday gift shopping isn’t sucking the life and cash out of you, and if it is, we hope the holiday magic re-inflates you at a proportionate rate. We’ve been flarpin’ blessed with blessings lately, and we hope the same holds true for you. Last week’s shows were a wonderland of funderland, so many top-shelf sweethearts on stage and in the audience alike. Legends abounded this past week, and legends did not disappoint. Kevin Smith, Jennifer Tilly, and Seth Rogen were all in the house this week, and as funny and humble and sweet as you hope they’d be. We also saw an unexpected exotic dance, so yes Virginia there IS a Scandal Clause.

We like to think of our shows as metaphorical ornaments for the non-denominational, all faith/no faith Decembered tree we erect in our hearts. 🥰 Or maybe that’s just a sentence we wrote to transition into the next bit. You can pick whatever works for you.
