Dynasty Dygest: July 30th

Jane Fonda Wuz Here! Happy Dynaversary, Workjuice! What Pairs Well With… Murder!? We Went Medieval, Kinda Literally!

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Hello sweet darlings!

Last newsie of July! HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE!? Time, she gallops fast’r than the finest steed in our cavalry! Last week was an o’er flowing cornucopia of blessings. Raise your glass (if applicable) as we recount them!

Dynasty was a HOUSE OF ICONS! On Friday we were graced by Grace herself, JANE FONDA in a special event put on by one of our favorite non-profits (and neighbors!) GET LIT. Our buddy SAM CURTIS interviewed JANE about her career and her artistic approach. She is as amazing, intelligent, driven, and yes  as you’d hope. And on Saturday we hosted producer/showrunner/writer/super nice guy, BRUCE FERBER’s book release for his new book about the ins and outs of Hollywood, The Way We Work, and he brought with him a slew of incredibly talented folks, including JASON ALEXANDER. Hewas ALSO all the good things!

The past week we also had the pleasure of an encore performance of DREW DROEGE’s Happy Birthday Doug, which is now headed off Broadway! Drew is a megastar and we’re grateful for any time he, and the other characters that live in his brain, grace our stage. Everything’s Great was sold out, and everything was super DUPER great. BECK BENNETT sang some ditties and *HOT GOSS* told us that ADAM SANDLER was recently praising Dynasty on the set of SNL! DEMI ADEJUYIGBE was missing under suspicious circumstances! ADDIE WEYRICH is not just a comedic joy bomb, she’s also a BLACK BELT and she proved it! (First karate on stage! Unlikely practitioner!) Saturday night’s Dynasty Tonight! was delightful- MOSHE KASHER and NATASHA LEGGERO offered up couple’s counseling! (MOSHE also debuted a scary story about a judgmental Uber driver!) We swooned for SANDY HONIG! She crooned for usSABRINA JALEES’ closed out the night with a killer set and proceeds went to support the heroes at RAICES!

On Sunday we went on our first full staff excursion and it was a dang  delight ! We went to another venue that knows a thing or two about fog use, enchantment, and utensil-free dining. Yes, we stormed MEDIEVAL TIMES! We slurped soup, waved flags, and cheered for our knight (red and yellow for life)! It was a true Dyna-fam fun day, and got us even more excited than usual about our mission to enjoy the joy and absurdity of life. We came back with bellies full of ol' timey grub, our minds full of new Dynnovations, and each of us with a souvenir picture (Jamie insisted we upgrade to the Queen’s Royalty package 🤷‍♀️ ) that we’ll treasure forever.

And now, for now. TONIGHT!   It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas    …. in July. At 8pm it’s Deck the Hallmark Podcast, live: Christmas in July! The guys from the amazing, hilarious, Hallmark-movie central podcast will be reviewing A December Bride, and hosting a Q & A afterwards.

WEDNESDAY we’re celebrating, baby! It’s the one year Dyna-versary of one of our favorite shows, WorkJuice Improvwith the usual mischief from PAUL F. TOMPKINSMARK GAGLIARDIHAL LUBLINLil’ JANET VARNEY, ANNIE SAVAGEMARC EVAN JACKSONCRAIG CACKOWSKI and special guest…. MICHEAL MCMILLIAN! (True Blood! Crazy Ex-Girlfriend!) The traditional one-year anniversary gift is paper, but in the interest of a greener-planet, let’s replace that with e-tickets. E-treat yourself (and the WorkJuicers!) by nabbing your tickets and enjoying the show.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY we welcome the true crime n’ good wine podcast, WINE & CRIME! Friday is sold out, but there are a handful of tickets left for Thursday night! Grab yours and come on down to the Dynasty to learn about a true crime story and sip some vino to take the edge off.

SATURDAY we’ll have a DYNASTY TONIGHT! ready for you, Beach Blanket Dyngo-style! What does this mean? We play Dyngo (like bingo, but with “dy” instead of “bi” because… Dynasty) before the show! We embrace a general beach vibe! We crank the AC and escape the heat, and we crank the comedy and escape reality. Join us, moon doggies! So far we've confirmed Dynasty favorites MARGARET CHODAVE ROSS, and BECKY ROBINSON, and we got more announcements coming later this week.

Anyone have a Lindt story yet?,

Vanessa & Jamie

Dynasty Dygest: July 23rd

This Week: Dynasty Named "Best Of LA" By LA Mag! Snl’s Beck Bennett! Pen15’s Anna Konkle! Seinfeld’s Jason Alexander! + Dt Is Now A Lindt Supplier! 🍫 😍

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Hieee Darlings!

How are you? Hope you've been having a super fun summer full of surfing and SPF-loaded tanning opportunities. OpperTANities: yet another solid-gold business idea we simply haven’t had the bandwidth to pursue. If someone on the list wants to start a tanning business and name it opporTANities, you have our blessing. Or if you just want to create a photoshop rendering of that business, do that and send it our way and we’ll put it in the newsletter. Everything is CONTENT.

First and foremost, LA Magazine put out their annual "Best of LA" edition, and Dynasty Typewriter was deemed "Best Comedy Club For Celeb Drop-ins." If we were writing the category ourselves, we might have pitched “Best Popcorn Restaurant featuring Live Entertainment," but we'll take the accolade!  We’ve truly been so amazed at the caliber of talent we’ve gotten to host here in our first year and a half, and we're excited that the press is taking note. Read the article here.

Last week we were #blessed with so many great shows! If you attended, you know. If you missed em: TAYLOR TOMLINSON’s hour was “electric!” - Jamie Flam.  A full house and so much energy, and wow wow wow, Taylor?! More like SLAYlor (Taylor, you’re free to use this! We’re feeling so generous!) BRENDAN SCANNELL PROMISED this would be cute… and it was! Brendan’s show was amazing- from stand-up to sketch to story-telling to headset mic-wearing musical numbers, he can do it ALL and he did it damnnnn cute, honey. Go see and support everything he does, m'kay?

Saturday we had a Dynasty Tonight, Beach Blanket Dyngo-style! Our staff wore beachy attire (spoiler alert, they were even cuter than usual! SAMEE has knees! MIKE was born to wear a bold Hawaiian print! TONY in a straw hat is a good… nay, great thing! KATIE’s mellow vibes were born to sport Quicksilver!) and JAMIE and VANESSA kicked the night off with DYNGO (reminding us that bingo is the most fun game ever, and spinning the ball cage is feels fun, glamorous, and just close enough to playing god!) a few lucky audience members won AMAZING PRIZES including…. LINDT chocolate bars. In other news, Dynasty Typewriter is now an official Lindt Venue™.  Visit our concession stand and buy your ticket to chocolate paradise. On a date? Seal the deal* with a Lindt™.  Most of the world’s greatest love affairs began with a Lindt… what’s YOUR Lindt story?

This week we’ll be enjoying the fruity and deep notes of 70% dark chocolate Lindt bars (which pair BEAUTIFULLY with DynaPop, for our customers who are interested in a DynaLuxe™ level experience) while watching some amazing entertainment. TONIGHT we’re thrilled that we’ve got an encore performance of the amazing DREW DROEGE’s one-man show where he plays many, many men. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOUG! If you missed the show on it’s first two sold-out performances, bebes, do yourself a favor and soak up this Dynasty three-peat. Guess where the show goes next!? An Off-Broadway run at SoHo Playhouse in 2020! See it before all those NYC culture-elites, and out-elite them! THURSDAY we’ll be hosting Time Out LA Staged: Made in LA! The first in our quarterly comedy series with Time Out LA and host/producer JANE BORDEN come see some of the great comics that the City of Angels gets to claim as her own lil’ cherubs. JAMES ADOMIAN! DANIELLE PEREZ! JESUS TREJO! FELICIA FOLKES! SHAWN PEARLMAN! Oh Los Angeles, you sure create some characters. FRIDAY the show with the most adorable three amigos since the Three Amigos is back! It’s the aptly-named Everything is Great! show hosted by NICK KOCHERDEMI ADEJUYIGBE, and ADDIE WEYRICH! As if this trio isn't enough, they booked a line-up that makes everything even more than great! BECK BENNETT! ANNA KONKLE! ZACK FOX! JANELLE JAMES! This will sell out in about five minutes, so buy your tickets in the next four. THEN AT 10PM, horror fans rejoice, because the good folks from Friday Night Frights are presenting Dario Argento’s Phenomena

SATURDAY we’re hosting a matinee book release… nay, extravaganza! It’s the launch of television writer/producer and novelist BRUCE FERBER’s new book, The Way We Work: On The Job in HollywoodIf you’re interested in the industry, insider stories, or seeing a great collection of people (including agents, producers, oh and JASON ALEXANDER!) talk about their showbiz experiences, COME TO THIS SHOW. Get the book! Get it signed! Enjoy DynaBrew!  And at 8pm, we have a very special Dynasty Tonight with proceeds going to RAICES to help immigrants in need of legal services. Headlined by the truly fantastic SABRINA JALEES and featuring such amazing-faves as: MOSHE KASHER! NATASHA LEGGERO! SANDY HONIG! and moooooore. Get your dang tickets, darlings!

SUNDAY is the triumphant return of ABERDEEN What is Aberdeen? Great question. It’s MATT SHEEHY’s (Lost Lander, EL VY) story of moving to the remote woods of Washington state. He tells the story with music, art, projection, storytelling… it’s eerie and beautiful and immersive. We hosted Matt in November, and we’re so happy to have him back. Every ticket comes with a digital download of the album! Now THAT’S a combo deal.

Every love story is a Lindt story… what’s yours?

Jamie & Vanessa

*”Sealing the deal” does not refer to anything physical. It just means you’re showing someone that they are HIGHLY VALUED and you’d like to spend more time with them.

Dynasty Dygest — July 16th

This Week: Brendan Scanell! Free Indoor Beach! Taylor Tomlinson! Rhea Butcher! Sasheer Zamata! Princess Bride Revelations!

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

Hey Beach Blanket Baby-Darlings,

Well, if you wish for summer long enough, THIS happens. (It's getting hot here in Los Angeles.) 🤷‍♀️ 🥵 But let’s talk about happy things, like shows at Dynasty in the comfort of the always crankin’ A/C. Ahhhh. We kept it cool last week with some truly exceptional shows. ROSE ABDOO was as delightful as she herself is (and she is VERY delightful.) HANNAH GADBSY’s return of DOUGLAS was a triumph; her show was amazing at its debut in March and has only gotten more polished and insightful and funny... which we honestly wouldn’t have thought necessary. She’s very talented. It’s a bit much! Like, the perfect amount of much. ELIOT GLAZER’s Haunting Renditions gave us allll that bad music and made it sooooo good. CECILY STRONG turned up and turned out in early aughts fashion with a gorgeous duet of “I’m Real” that somehow elevated the J.Lo / Ja Rule masterpiece. JEN KIRKMAN talked about the good ol’ days, JACKIE TOHN talked about her good ol' days on American Idol and performed an acoustic version of “Baby Got Back” that made us love- nay, ADORE, big butts. AGAIN. In shattering news, “Bugaboo” isn't the timeless ballad we thought it was.

Saturday’s DYNASTY TONIGHT was a gem - the whole line-up was wonderful, the DynaPop flowed like liquid popcorn, and we had a magician (BEN SEIDMAN) who made us remember, as magicians always do, “Dang, magic is fun.” Sunday’s FETAL POSITION show marked the first of many times that the theater entrance will be transformed into an elegant vagina. SHELLY SLOCUM delivered a hell of a show that was equal parts informative, hilarious, gross, not at all gross, and really good in all the ways. JAMIE DENBO gave a diatribe on pads we’ll never forget, KAY CANNON regaled us with a cautionary tale of pain-management, and RACHEL BLOOM sang a beautiful ballad (rightfully) accusing God of not understanding women's bodies. All that annnnnd the proceeds went to Planned Parenthood! Great people putting on great shows to do great things… kinda the best.

THIS WEEK we’re up to our usual theater-based mischief. TOMORROW join us for TAYLOR TOMLINSONTHURSDAY it’s LINDSAY AMES’ show baby, the hilarious and exposing My Diary with diary readings from RHEA BUTCHER, JOHN HENNIGAN  and more. FRIDAY we welcome BRENDAN SCANNELL (The Cure with Joel Kim Booster, NETFLIX’ Bonding)  for his solo show I Promise This Will Be Cute! If he promises, we believvvve honey. SATURDAY it’s our hometown honeys show, Dynasty Tonight! This week, BEACH BLANKET DYNGO edition! Come on down for some indoor, air-conditioned, good ol’ fashioned summer fun! The line-up will be top notch (FAHIM ANWAR and SASHEER ZAMATA confirmed so far), the surprises will be surprising, and the Dyngo (Dynasty Bingo) will be dusted off and ready for some action.

In life-news, we had the pleasure of using the theater as our private movie theater this weekend for both Jamie and Vanessa’s families. We watched The Princess Bride (it holds up! Except how REALLY mean Wesley [as The Dread Pirate Roberts] is to Buttercup when he’s first reunited with her. He’s vicious and he threatens to hit her! Why is he taking that little charade so far? Is it because he’s so mad she is engaged to Humperdink? If so, he’s got some major jealousy issues he needs to work through before he’s ready for an adult relationship.) It was such a special afternoon, and seeing the theater full of our families ranging from ages two and a half weeks to ninety three years was pretty darn magical.

Thank you all for becoming our ever-growing Dynasty family. We’ll screen movies for you, too!

How do YOU top YOUR pop?*,

Jamie & Vanessa

Dearest Darlings,

Happy post-long weekend! We hope it was a time of recharging and rejuvenating and enjoying your life. We also hope every day is a day of enjoying your life! Whenever you’re really not enjoying your life, take a pause and try to see if you can (legally) eliminate the not good thing, and if you can, DO! And if you can’t, look the not good thing squarely in the face (or approximate face) and say, “I see you. I accept you. Let’s try to find our way through this, compadre.” And that’s your dose of Dynasty wisdom for the day. YOU'RE WELCOME!

We had a lovely little break, with the dark nights at the theater affording us some time to get cozy with loved ones and season 3 of Stranger Things. Saturday’s GO DAY was a gosh darn dream, we laughed,  we learned about delicious CBD chocolates from the founder of Calivolve! BARRY & JASON started a month-long creative accountability buddy group tentatively titled the Bud-Holes! SHELLY SLOCUM talked about the patriarchy (RELAX, men! You’re safe!) and got us VERY excited for her upcoming show with RACHEL BLOOM and KAY CANNON and more, JAMIE talked about his time in Big Sur and shared a powerpoint he made that included some truly inspiring transitions and text effects (who knew words could UNDULATE?!) AND it was BABY FRANCIE's first time on the Dynasty stage. She accompanied Vanessa for the whole event and was the picture of poise and grace (and intense slumber.) Saturday night’s Dynasty Tonight featured some of our favorite performers making us feel our favorite things (happy! enchanted! excited!) including KEVIN NEALON killing it as per usual, FELICIA FOLKES serving up auntie-vibes that belie her youth, PAM SEVERNS doing the coziest burlesque we’ve ever seen, and RON FUNCHES giving us forty minutes of heaven. Yesterday we got our adrenaline spiked (we are total adrenaline junkies as long as the adrenaline can be procured in a safe, quiet, seated position) by announcing ONLY to our mailing list (that’s you!) that HANNAH GADSBY would be returning to the Dynasty this week! We sent the email and watched the clock, within minutes her show was totally sold out (and we were getting emails wondering why tickets said “unavailable.” Because they sold, darlings! They sold SO FAST. We’ve got some lightning-fingers on our list!)

ANYWAY!  THURSDAY we have two powerhouses in the house, which we consider a powerhouse, making this a POWERHOUSE NIGHT to the THIRD POWER (Powerhouse Night ^3, or “PHN cubed™")  First up, ROSE ABDOO (Gypsy from Gilmore girls! A real star from STARS HOLLOW IS COMING TO US!) in her solo show, Rose Abdoo & Rose Abdon’tThen we have the afore mentioned, immediately sold-out HANNAH GADSBY show.

FRIDAY night, house favorite ELIOT GLAZER’s Haunting Renditions: bad music made good. This week Eliot will be joined by JACKIE TOHN (GLOW), CECILY STRONG (SNL), JEN KIRKMAN and ELI BRADEN. Oh, and you know, the ORCHESTRA he brings with him! Don’t miss this show!

SATURDAY, it’s our show of comedy and surprises with a hand-picked lineup and machine-popped corn, Dynasty Tonight! This week’s lineup features host with most, ATSUKO OKATSUKA! The man with the good ol’boy voice but the woke-new boy soul (our description, not his) BILLY WAYNE DAVIS! Plus JAY LARSON and mooooore surprises and delights TBA.

SUNDAY the hilarious, smart and insightful SHELLY SLOCUM returns with her show, THE FETAL POSITONThis show. benefitting Planned Parenthood, promises to be informative and hilarious and attending also has the added bonus of being an act of resistance against everyone that wants women to shut up about their bodies and rights! We LOVE acts of resistance that involve great popcorn and great lineups. ABOUT THAT LINEUP! RACHEL BLOOM! (Crazy Ex Girlfriend!) KAY CANNON! (Pitch Perfect!) JAMIE DENBO (Ronna and Beverly!) plus MORE (including a sex therapist!) What a world, what a week, what a time to be alive.

Muskrat love,

Jamie & Vanessa

VANESSA HAD A FLARKIN' BABY! PLUS: DOUBLE PFT! CRISTELA ALONZO! JIM O’HEIR FROM PARKS & REC! SMOOTH POPERATORS! SEXY ANECDOTES!

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Darlings!

Jamie here. You good? Great, us too! FYI, Vanessa wrote most of this newsletter yesterday, and THEN ALMOST IMMEDIATELY GAVE BIRTH TO A HEALTHY BABY GIRL! We don't want to say that our newsletters can definitely induce labor, but the proof is in the pudding, and the pudding's name is FRANCIE and we're already in love! She is our first of what we hope will be many (but not too many) theater babies! We're also inspired. Stay tuned for a line of Dynasty brand onesies, baby blankets, and SAFE baby mobiles. MAZEL TOV, Vanessa and John and Oliver! Now let's enjoy the rest of this lil' newsie knowing that it was fueled by Francie's impending voyage.

Last week was a delicious sherbet bowl of good flavors. TEAM COCO (our fave team! We need jerseys! Speaking of jerseys anyone have a uniform hookup? SERIOUSLY. We’re having visions of the Dynasty team in a sort of mechanic-meets-Mouseketeer shirts, and don’t know where to begin! Other than Google, we DO know about Google, sassies! Ok, back to lil’ newsie now) brought the delights with a lineup of stud-stars. NICK KROLL, DEMETRI MARTIN, and CHRIS REDD were all predictably perfect. Chris recounted some recent run-ins with fools across the pond, MOSES let us in on how he trolled thousands to their delight, and upwards of three BEASTS OF SUMMER were ordered. BETH STELLING’s hour was a treat of a show (go see her wherever and whenever you can! Including Chipotle!) High Diary had everyone floating on good vibes and getting just the right amount of TMI. The Nightmare Cinema screening was a sold out success, proving once again that horror fans are actually not scary at all! Y’all are lovely and orderly and save the screaming for the screeninnnns. You’ll all be glad to know that the creator of BoJack Horseman is lovely and wonderful and humble and not at all like the cartoon horse human he created. Everything is Great had their SECOND Dynasty show, and they are currently at 2 for 2 for sold-out delights.  WILL THEY MAKE IT TO 3/3!? Defeated only by themselves? Find out next month! (Friday 7/26, 8pm!)

TONIGHT we welcome KPCC’s NANCY podcast! Come hang out with BFF’s KATHY TU and TOBIN LOW as they discuss the LGBTQIA experience! We’ll have bar for this one, lush loves! Also, the very special guests are JOEL KIM BOOSTER (we love) and astrologer superstar, CHANI NICHOLASWEDNESDAY we’ve got the Workjuice Players! Yes, THOSE Workjuice Players! We’re talkin’: PAUL F TOMPKINS! CRAIG CACKOWSKI! MARC EVAN JACKSON! HAL LUBLIN! ANNIE SAVAGE! MARK GAGLIARDI! and LITTLE JANET VARNEY (aw!)  Come watch this thrilling cast create scenes and laughter out of thin, popcorn-scented, air. THURSDAY we will answer “What’s in a name?” when we watch and discover what exactly TOBY HUSS’ show A Bank Robbers’ Story with Penises is all about. We love Toby, he brought Dynasty the amazing and jam packed RUDY CASONI Christmas show this year, and he’ll always be Artie, The Strongest Man In the World. We cant wait to see this show. Join us! We’ll save you a seat.

FRIDAY, make it a double feature, hun! At 8pm we have  The Worst Idea of All Time. The New Zealand based podcast is coming to LA and we’re so glad to have them! (And to add another notch to our New Zealander belt!) These guys deserve a heroes’ welcome, as they’ve been watching and reviewing Sex and The City: The Movie twice a week FOR CLOSE TO SIX MONTHS. It really is the worst idea. We cant wait to hear them and their just announced special guest PAUL F. TOMPKINS (twice in one week!)Then, at 10 we’ve got Get Reel! with JOE CASTLE BAKER and MAX WITTERT. What iiiiis get reel!? It’s a movie-clip based comedy show with comedians dubbing clips live. Dubbin’ in we’ve got JARED GOLDSTEIN, LAUREN WHITE, SANDY HONIG and more!

SATURDAY starts at 2pm with MELINDA HILL’TV Writers and Comedians game show meets panel show meets perfect way to spend an afternoon with comedians and Hollywood insiders (ooooh!). At 7:30 join us for the jewel of the Dynasty, Dynasty Tonight! This week’s hand-picked array of beloveds includes: CRISTELA ALONZO! CHRIS FAIRBANKS! KIMBERLY CLARK! JARED LOGAN! Host MATT O’BRIEN and music by STRANGE HOTELS! And then at 10pm its the Dynasty Premiere of The Night Time Show the live talk show with music, comedy, and this month- a really dope wrestling poster. Special guests include JIM O’HEIR (Parks and Rec!) MAURICE LAMARCHE (all the voices in all the cartoons! Including being the BRAIN in Pinky and the Brain!) BRITNEY YOUNG and JACKIE TOHN from GLOW! And Music from LOGAN HENDERSON!

SUNDAY we welcome back our favorite quadruple threat (twerking counts for at least 3 threats, right?!) ATSUKO OKATSUKA with her woke Japanese game show, Let’s Go Atsuko

In other news:
  • Vanessa got a new HUMMINGBIRD FEEDER! (and gave birth this morning to a human baby called Francie.)
  • Jamie's back in a HEALTHY-ISH POPSICLE PHASE.
  • Meryl Streep in Big Little Lies is WORTH THE HYPE
  • And naturally, we’re brainstorming a SADE themed month at the concession stand. Smooth Poperator, Sweet Taboo & MORE!
Every story has another story inside,

Jamie and Vanessa

NICK KROLL! DEMETRI MARTIN! CHRIS REDD! BETH STELLING! KYLE MOONEY!  BOJACK HORSEMAN & OTHER BEASTS OF SUMMER UNLEASHED!

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
June Moon Darlings

Can you feel it? We are in the wake of last night’s full moon, so if you or a loved one has been extra feral, blame it on that. If you’ve been steady as they come, congrats on your disposition! Must be nice to be stable. Speaking of stables, our stable of shows last week was chock full of priiiiiize ponies! Let us tell you about these hottie trotties! First on the line, master stallion DREW DROEGE came out the gates strong and finished like a champion with the UNIVERSE premiere of his new show, Happy Birthday Doug! It was a triumph. Hilarious, insane, with well-crafted characters that made us howl, groan, and eventually stand up clapping (AKA standing-ovation) BOTH NIGHTS. Drew, you contain multitudes! Thank you for letting us have a peek inside. Our Dynasty Pryde show on Thursday was a rainbow of goodness, with a repeat onstage appearance of MARGARET CHO’s beautiful baby dog LUCIA, a visit from SAM PANCAKE's wheelchair wielding drama-queen crooner Fritzie Zimmer, JOEL KIM BOOSTER giving us terrifying insight into cruise culture, and ERIN FOLEY regaling us with tales of being rebuffed from an octogenarian-buffet and more. Friday night brought out the FRIGHTS with (count ‘em) not one but FOUR horror films! YES, we had four screenings in one night and they were ALL scary. For one night only the Dynasty was a real nightmare factory, but don’t worry, we quickly resumed our dreaminess / fever-dreaminess. Saturday was the sold out UNIVERSE premiere (two UNIVERSE premieres in one week!? Who do we think we are!?) of The Fast and The Furious: The Musical Parody. And if you DON’T like tight harmonies, cardboard muscle cars, hot girls in bald caps and dudes dressed as traffic cones, then YOU ARE NOT OUR PEOPLE. But if you’re merely not SURE if you’d like those things, then you should come and see and you will find out you DO indeed like those things and you will comfortably be back in the territory of being our beloved people. To get back to that horse metaphor that we started and abandoned up at the top of this newsie, this show was a thoroughbred on ‘roids, BULGING with horsepower ( <— that’s a sort of hybrid horse and car joke that doesn’t QUITE check out, and might not even QUITE qualify as a joke, but hopefully conveys the sense of testosterone-drama we intend.)  Sunday Wild, Wild Christian took us all on a trip to the grounds of what was once Rajneeshpuram, but at the time of our tale a different cult had taken over. A Christian summer camp, full of Jesus-y ideas and decidedly non-Jesus-y coming of age hormones. Both cults teach the important lesson: humans be critters

TONIGHT our spirits are high because it’s TEAM COCO Presents Up & Up! MOSES STORM & co always put on the best, most well-produced, high energy show and tonight they’ve got NICK KROLL, DEMETRI MARTINFLULA BORG, BILLY WAYNE DAVIS, NAOMI EKPERIGIN, and SNL’s CHRIS REDD! Get your tickets and get your spirits UP and up!  WEDNESDAY night, it’s the delightful, hilarious, burrito lovin’ BETH STELLING. We’re huge #StellHeads and we’re so excited to see her hour! She’s (as her last album stated) simply the Beth. THURSDAY sneak out of your house and come get HIGH (Diary) with us! It’s a very special edition of LINDSAY AMES’ cringetastic diary reading show featuring JON BASS, JACKIE ZEBROWSKI, SANDY HONIG, AMIR K and more… and high!  And at 10pm we get CREEPY with MICKEY ROURKE in Nightmare Cinema! This screening (screaming!?) is sold out, boos. Let that be a lesson to you! A lesson about getting tickets quickly or suffering the GOMO™.

FRIDAY makes us wish we’d kept that horse metaphor going because we’d really be hitting the boJackpot right about now. We’re so excited for BoJack Horseman creator and executive producer RAPHAEL BOB-WAKSBERG to come to the Dynasty with his brand new book of stories, Someone Who Will Love You In All Your Damaged Glory! Come hear him read and get the book so you can hear yourself read it too! Then at 10pm we welcome the threesome we fell in love with just weeks ago, NICK KOCHER, DEMI ADEJUYIGBE, and ADDIE WEYRICH in their free-wheeling merrymaking show, Everything’s Great! With special guests SABRINA JALEES, KYLE MOONEY, SANDY HONIG and more!

Gotta go - the toaster just dinged and that means it’s BAGEL BITES o’clock

Feels like a great time to remind you that, contrary to popular belief, there IS a WAY TO EAT PIZZA ANY TIME. (When it’s on a bagel.)

🌈PRIDE! 🎉DROEGE! ⭐CHO! JOEL KIM BOOSTER!⭐+ RUSSELL BRAND RECAP! 🎷 LISA SIMPSON! AND THE SCENES BABOON GOSS 🐵

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

Beautiful darlings,

How are you? <— Such a classic and unimpeachable way to kick off a newsletter. Uninspired? SURE! But offensive? HARDLY.

It’s starting to feel like summer out here, which has us ready for the beach*! (*More inside-nights at the theater! All the fun of the beach without the sand in your trousers!) Things got steamy last week, with a roster of shows that were turning up the heatttt, hun! The SHELF LIFE screening was an amazing opportunity to get to watch a bizarre comedy gem never given the chance to shine in the theater. What a treat! JOHN EARLY can add moderator to the list of things at which he’s flawless. The MOTHER JONES Food For Thought event was delllllicious, insightful, and we can now say with certainty, yes, FRAN DRESCHER is the icon you need. Regardless of how you feel about her Nanny work, she was in UHF, which makes her indelible in our* (*Jamie's) book and Spinal Tap which gives her Goddess Status in our OTHER* (*Vanessa's) book . The event ended with humanitarian and grammy-nominated musician ROCKY DAWUNI getting the entire crowd on their feet singing, and it sounded so beautiful and gave us hope for the future! Ah, MAGIC, Dynasty Style. Thursday we emo-ed out with Every Place I Cry (so many feelings! So much eyeliner!) and then felt very hip at the Subtle Pride show!  It was an honor to host their West Coast debut! They are triple threats: great musicians, delightfully absurd, and sooooo cool. Like, cooler than a sun wearing sunglasses. WE KNOW.  Friday GREG BEHRENDT presented an epic hour of a concert performance / story telling that had the room boppin’ and laughin’ along to the evergreen tale of an American musician turned Japanese cosmetics mogul. Podcast the Ride was a RIDE: sold out show, lovely crowd, and the Dynasty walls have 100% never seen more Hawaiian shirts or jean jackets bedazzled with Disney enamel pins. And we ain’t complaining, sweetie. Saturday TIM HIEDECKER’s album release was pitch perfect, except that we were left to wrestle with the unfair facts of life that some people can be that funny and that earnestly good at music. Then, CLOWNVIS took the stage… and our hearts. (Also we had some hot audience sightings! Clownvis fans include VIC BERGER and RICHIE THE BARBER!)

Last night was RUSSELL BRAND and honestly, we didn’t know what to expect! From his huge roles in film to his Instagram guru presence, what brand of brand was coming in? Safe to say it was all of them (with a heavy lean into guru, including stories about hanging with ECKHART TOLLE and the DALAI LAMA. Soon he'll be able to add stories about hanging out with VANESSA RAGLAND and JAMIE FLAM to that list!) After Russell, JACQUELINE NOVAK and JOHN EARLY split the bill, and the bill was, per usual, priiiiiiceless.

THIS WEEK is going to be a rainbow of goodness, starting with TONIGHT and WEDNESDAY's debut performances of a new one-person show from one of our favorite brains/humans, the incomparable DREW DROEGE! Get ready to celebrate, it’s Happy Birthday Doug! The show description is so good we have to share it: "Doug is turning 41 today. He’s visited by friends, nightmares, a few exes, and even a ghost. Imagine a gay Christmas Carol/modern day exorcism set in a wine bar in Silverlake. Welcome to the party!” If you’ve ever seen Drew perform you’ve already gotten tickets to this no-brainer, and if you HAVEN’T seen him, make this the time. He’s hilarious, has a singular talent for insane characters that teeter on the line between reality and absurdity, and beyond that he’s just a really great human.

THURSDAY we’re celebrating Pride! But since it’s a Dynasty show we’re spelling it PRYDE because, we love Ys. It’s Dynasty Tonight, Pryde of Dynasty Edition! And we are beyond PROUD to have this lineup: JOEL KIM BOOSTER, MARGARET CHO, SAM PANCAKE, DAN FRANZESE, ERIN FOLEY and more!

FRIDAY get ready to get scared, boos! At 5:30 grab your snacks and drinks and get cozy (on the edge of your seat) for a triple feature from Cranked Up & Shudder: An Evening of Nightmares with JOE DANTE, MICK GARRIS, and ALEJANDRO BRUGUES. Films on the docket include: Sleep Walkers, Juan of the Dead, and Piranha. In addition to the films, there will be Q & A with the directors! Then a 11pm, Friday Night Frights presents a screening of SHAKMAWhat’s Shakma? Just a story about an RPG game gone wrong and a bloodthirsty lab baboon, and guess what? MONTY COX, owner of TYPHOON the baboon (who portrayed Shakma) is going to join in for a Q & A, and will have his memoir about a life working with exotic animals on film with him! Finally, Jamie and Vanessa will have a forum to ask their burning questions about MR. EDLUCKY from ALF, and re-hash some issues regarding the criminally overrated EDDIE from Frasier (just another average Jack Russell delivering a generic performance. It shoulda been a mutt!)

SATURDAY we are so truly hyped (pumped? AMPED!) for The Fast and The Furious: Musical Parody but, the tickets sold in the manor of the film: fastly and with fury. It is sold out, but who’s to say if that’s because the cast, crew, and producer are truly amazing (and the sneak peeks of musical numbers we’ve seen are DREAMS) or if it’s just the contagious Midas touch of being connected to the Best Movie Franchise Ever. See you Saturday, family.
SUNDAY at 6pm come hear the tale of a Wild, Wild ChristianSIMONE MCALONEN’s hilarious and true coming of age story… set on a ranch in Central Oregon which was transformed from the Rajneeshee’s murderous sext cult stomping grounds to a wholesome Christian Summer Camp. (Yes, there are similarities.) Sunday is also Father’s Day! Send your sweet cards right now! Or if it’s a complicated day for you, celebrate or ignore in a manner that serves you. It's your life, hon, and we celebrate what you celebrate and how you celebrate it (exceptions apply)!

MONDAYHarmontown will be back in session with special guest YEARDLEY SMITH. Yep! LISA SIMPSON will be at the Dynasty. EYES WILL ROLL (in a good way)!

get bent,

Vanessa & Jamie

REFLECTIONS FOR REFLECTING ON
A New Occasional Dynasty Newsletter Mini-Section
by Jamie Flam

Hi, it's me, Jamie Flam from Dynasty Typewriter! If you were at the theater last week you may have been like "I'm having the best time like I do every time I'm here but something feels just slightly off."  You may have suspected it was the ghosts that live here (and usually it is), but this time it was definitely because I wasn't on the premises. You see, last week I was able to get away and completely disconnect for the first time since we opened the theater a year and a half ago! I spent a few nights at a silent retreat at a hermitage up in the mountains near Big Sur, where internet and cell connections were rendered useless and the views of the Pacific were rendered priceless! FYI, The Pacific is what's called an "ocean." Go figure! Not being able to use my phone was terrifying, as like for so many of us it's become quite the addiction, but it was ultimately liberating AF! I highly recommend you try it as it forces you to be ok to just exist. And existence can be not torturous if you pay attention! Great insights were had as I gazed into the clouds or the trees or the ocean or the animals (I saw a bunch of birds and a bunny and a dern snake!), and now I am back in Los Angeles feeling revived and relaxed and less self-judgey. I've even including a selfie I took... of myself! But don't focus on me, focus on the lush greenery... My eyes! The good news is that with all my new enlightenment I haven't lost my brilliant zaniness or penchant for exclamation points!!! Why am I writing this and including it in our newsletter where we usually tell you about shows? Because we are more than just a theater. We are human beings trying to make sense of this flarkin' life and we want to share what we learn, even if it's not directly related to the theater. But really it is, because everything is connected. I learned that last week. Point is, put your phone down, take some deep breaths, look at some plants, take a trip if you are able, and love yourself best you can because you're a damn treasure. And do yourself a favor and get yourself a Dynasty t-shirt. They are as stylish as they are comfortable.

Oh, I went to the aquarium in Monterey, and sea otters are fucking great!

Dynasty Dygest — June 4th

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

June baddaBOOM Darlins!

Happy Pride month honeys of all shapes, sizes, identities and orientations! June has started and she’s… magnificent. So far it’s been gloomy outdoors here (Narmee Dynasty always said, "June glooms bring July grooms” so, men on the verge of commitment, REJOICE and get your fingers ring-ready!) But inside the walls of the Dynasty, the sun has been shinin’ as brightly as e’er. We closed out May with some real gems, including ADAM SANDLER’s shows (he’s still got it!) and THE WORKJUICE PLAYERS serving up an amazing make-believe complete with Criminal Mind'KIRSTEN VANGSNESS’ reoccurring role as an immortal tequila worm (typecasting WORKS, Hollywood!) We also had our first (of many?) Daddy-themed romantic RPG event with audience members dressed in Dad cosplay. We’d go on, but that was a pretty evocative last sentence, and truly we’d rather leave the details up to your very skilled imaginations.

Friday night we enjoyed a double-header evening of comedy from the Everything’s Great Crew (DEMI ADEJUYIGBE, NICK KOCHER & ADDIE WEYRICH) and the boyz of BUTT (CHRIS STEPHENS and JOE MCADAM.) Then Saturday, it was JUNE! Saturday’s GO DAY was a success (come to the next one! Free, first Saturday of the month!) and we got career advice, writing tips, soulful guidance, and a monitor puppet lesson. It was wonderful to get inspired by our community, get reminded of the importance of play and failure, and eat ice cream. (Yeah, we ate ice cream.)  Saturday night’s Dynasty Tonight! was a THRILL, with the whole lineup delivering magical performances (especially the magician) and with the added bonus & bragging point of it being the first show MARGARET CHO wore her dog onstage for. That’s right, a beautiful 3 pound chihuahua named Lucia had the best seat in the house on Margaret’s hip. Sunday’s preview of JACQUELINE NOVAK’S Get On Your Knees was amazing, and if you get a chance to see it DO. Also you might get a chance to see it realllll soon! Which brings us to THIS marvelous week!

TONIGHT we’re a movie theater, baby! We’re so excited to screen SHELF LIFE, the never-released, undiscovered final feature film from legendary director PAUL BARTEL. This film went unreleased, but the 35mm negative was discovered just in time for the 25th anniversary. Join us to watch it, and to enjoy a Q & A led by darling JOHN EARLY with special guests/co-stars/ co-writers O-LAN JONESANDREA STEIN and JIM TURNER.

WEDNESDAY we’re hosting Food For Thought: a conversation about access, affordability, and equity in the food system. Brought to us by MOTHER JONES and FOOD TANK, you’ll get to hear from some of today’s leaders in food, chefs, restauranteurs, advocates AND some very special guests… including, FRAN DRESCHER. (WE KNOW.)

THURSDAY we hope you’re in the mood for moods, because we’ve got two shows serving them up in big, musical ways. At 8pm it’s Every Place I Cry, the improvised emo concert with a live band and four lead singers you know and love (including OffBook’s JESS MCKENNA and ZACH REINO, Improvised Shakespeare’s ROSS BRYANT, and Duncanville’s NICK MANDERNACH). And then at 10, it’s Subtle Pride, an improvisational voice band bringing their hyper original pop music to LA for the first time, following a sold-out run in NYC! And they say if you can make it in New York City you can make it ANYWHERE so just imagine what they’ll do at the Dynasty!! The group is comprised of MISHA BROOKS (Marvelous Mrs. Maisel)  ZACH DONOVAN (Waif Magazine), MINA WALKER (Daisy the Great) and we’re very excited to see BRIGETTE LUNDY-PAINE (who we loved SO much on Netflix’ Atypical.)

Did you love the cool music stuff you read about for Thursday? GOOD! You’re properly whetted for the rest of the weekend! FRIDAY we’ve got two events, the first of which is GREG BEHRENDT’s show, The King Sweater. Come celebrate The King Sweater’s vainglorious (HIS WORD NOT OURS) career in music and cosmetics in this comedic fever dream. Then, the fever dream melts into a wild ride with PODCAST: THE RIDElive! It’s a show about theme parks with the MOST qualified hosts… three childless men in their thirties. We’d tell you more great things, but it would just break your heart because this show is SOLD OUT.

SATURDAY we’ve got TIM HEIDECKER & His Very Good Band’s Record Release show! We love music, we love Tim, and we love not knowing what’s real and what’s completely made-up, so we’ve been looking forward to this for a long time. And, ladies and gentlemen and folks of all folkness, we just announced a 10pm show for that evening… CLOWNVIS. He’s more than a Clown Elvis…. he’s our FAVORITE Clown Elvis, he’s the King of Clowns, and we’re longtime fans. If you haven’t seen him perform, PLEASE COME because you will fall in love, and if you HAVE seen him perform, you probably stopped reading and went to get tickets because you couldn’t wait and you’re so excited and we get it. He’ll be bringing a lineup of some of his friends, who we’ll announce as this week unfolds like the flower she is. SUNDAY, it’s ELENI MANDELL’s record release party!  Wake Up Again is Eleni’s 11th studio release, and we cant wait to hear her perform pieces from the album! Adding to the joy will be sets from two of our favorite performers, RON LYNCH and BRENT WEINBACH

yours in dreamin', schemin', and fightin’ demons,

vanessa and jamie
