Darlings,  It’s the last of the dog days of summer, Aug dawgs! At least, we think it is. We’re not 100% sure on the Oxford dog days definish’ and HONESTLY in times like these who can be bothered to Bing something that intense? Anyway, this last week was a real rescued Golden Retriever-mix of a week (read: just lovely.)  Did you come to DynastyLand!? If so, you know. If you didn’t, then doubtless you’ve been suffering from a very merited case of GOMO (Guarantee Of Missing Out™) the last few days. Wednesday’s big event was a complete success, with amazing performances in the main show, followed by an epic after party featuring treats a' plenty (free Van Leeuwen Ice Cream! Free Verve coffee floats! That good green stuff from Old Pal provisions, and more) amazing beats (DJ sets by Open Mike Eagle, DJ Breezy Eezy, Ricky Carmona, and Dax Jordan) a successful introduction of cotton candy Owl’s Beard, the inaugural installation of our two new tents, our staff looking better than ever, several puppet-related attractions, a roaming rhyming accordionist, spectacular tiny shows in the green room Root Cellar Cabaret, and so much more. Did we mention there were celeb sightings? Oh good, we didn’t want to mention it. We pride ourselves on our discretion. Long story short, it was a dreamy and packed party bursting with our favorite things. If you missed it, the only cure is NEVER LETTING THAT HAPPEN AGAIN. Next DynastyLand event is a spoooooky one in October, and we're sure we'll see you there! Friday and Saturday were two sold-out performances of The Fast and the Furious: a Musical Parody. Both nights received a well earned standing ovation from an audience that became a family. It’s all about FAMILY.   Speaking of family... TONIGHT join us for house and audience fav: Team Coco’s Up & Up with boy wonder (man wonder? We wonder how old he is! Sweet darlings,  It’s going to be hard to focus on writing the newsletter because right now we’re buzzing about tomorrow night’s BIG SHOW! So, we’ll just lead with that and try to get the excitement out of our system and then proceed with all the other great stuff! TOMORROW NIGHT is DYNASTYLAND! We’re putting on a show with our friends at podcasts by Spotify (they’re more than just music, hunnnn) and we’re so excited. We’ve got a great lineup: DEMETRI MARTIN! BARON VAUGHN! BETH STELLING! ATSUKO OKATSUKA! OPEY OLAGBAJU! Music from JOHN-ROBERT and more! We’ll be playing post-show DYNGO (bingo, Dynasty style!) we’ll be MAKING cotton candy, and we’ll likely be wearing dumb outfits! We’ll have the theater all DOOTED UP and ready for action! And special surprises await for ticket holders, so get your tickets and don’t be a-waitin’ anymore!  Ok, now back in the usual newsletter zone (UNZ). Last week? It was great! There was a 1970's variety show in 2019- and it worked! BRAD PITT in Cutting Class was as attractive as you’d want him to be! SAM MORRIL played to a sold-out crowd and it was “electric” in there - Jamie Flam. (And yes, he had the same quote about Taylor Tomlinson, and he stands by BOTH. Also, Taylor opened for Sam, so it was double electric (boogie woogie woogie woogie.) CAMERON ESPOSITO was amazing on Saturday with a crowd full of the sweetest fans you ever did see. They were there to laugh! They were there to celebrate! Birthdays AND divorces! For any life change, make your destination… Dynasty! Sunday was a private rental for a KOREAN POP GROUP! The beautiful boys of Ateez made K-POP fans of all of us. Their loving audience brought them amazing gifts!  This note from our nightly tech-log from the K-POP show is going right in the scrapbook: THESE GUYS WERE REALLY FUNNY. I ENDED UP HAVING A FAVORITE AND HE WINKED AT ME. AND NOW I UNDERSTAND THEIR APPEAL AND WILL LIKELY BE A FAN UNTIL I PASS AWAY.  ONE GUY RECEIVED A GUDETAMA HAT AND ANOTHER GOT A SPARKLY JACKET. I COVETED THESE ITEMS AND IT MADE ME WISH THAT, IN MY YOUTH, I HAD SPENT MORE TIME LEARNING TO DANCE.  (We will keep the tech anonymous, unless you ask and then we will tell you.) Now onto this week! TONIGHT we welcome back Every Place I Cry, the improvised emo concert! Featuring improv/singing wiz-kids: JESS MCKENNA (OffBook Podcast, Baby Wants Candy), ZACH REINO (OffBook Podcast, Baby Wants Candy), ROSS BRYANT (Improvised Shakespeare, Baby Wants Candy), NICK MANDERNACH (Duncanville, People of Earth.)  Come. Wear eyeliner. Gel and flatiron your hair. Feel ALL the emotions. WEDNESDAY we already talked about. THURSDAY at 8pm we welcome the current champion of NBC’s Last Comic Standing, CLAYTON ENGLISH! He’s blowing up, he’s wonderful, and we can’t wait to host him. FRIDAY and SATURDAY it’s encore performances of the musical that was a massive hit here on it’s debut, the timeless classic: The Fast and The Furious: A Musical Parody! They’re back, and they’re faster and they’re furiouser! Featuring four new songs! Beautiful women in bald caps! Beautiful men dressed as traffic cones! And of course: It’s all about FAMILY!  Hmm, what else? We’re finally finishing up our podcast studio and it’s looking good n’ foresty (photos soon!) We bought a cotton candy machine (which we already mentioned) but we also learned to use it AND named our cotton candy Owl’s Beard!  We made our first 5 batches this weekend, three of which were eaten by our AGM MIKE. Which gives us an idea!  CALLING ALL DDS!   We’ll print your info on the back of our Owl’sBeard, YOU give us free Zoom (or equivalent!) whitening sessions. That’s right! Happy Dynasty newsletter day to all, We hope this note finds you well! We wish it could be written on parchment, rolled into a scroll, sealed with wax and delivered by a large clever bird. Alas, we're forced to settle for digital mail delivered by digital “chimp.” MOVING ON.  You know what can be rough? Life. We love sending you happy silly emails, and we love feeling (1) happy and (2) silly. But lately, truth be told, the weight of the world is nearly impossible to escape. We’ve been having unfortunate conversations like “what is our gun policy?” (answer: no guns!) and while enjoying our own families, thinking about all those who have been separated. While trying to create magical, childlike experiences, there are scores of children who are in the midst of unthinkable trauma at uncaring hands. What do we do with this? As a society? As creatives? As people with hearts? We’ll be voting, we’ll be making calls and sending letters, and we’ll be getting up every day attempting to center our hearts and minds around our mission, which is to do good and make good and help put some positivity in the world. This is not the content you came for! But we just wanted to let you know that we're aware a lot of us are feeling very “what’s the point.”  We’re tying to remember that the point is sometimes absurdity and happiness and escape. The point is opening our doors to great experiences and sharing them with great people. And hopefully all that good stuff can help energize us to work against all that bad stuff, and hopefully Dynasty becomes for many what it already is for us, a place full of love and humor and art and celebrations. The Crossword Show with special guest MAYIM BIALIK (Blossom has blossomed into a PHD wielding, Big Bang star who is GOOD at crosswords!) and panelists IRENE TU (specialty: three letter words) and CHRIS GARCIA (speciality: potty talk) was the most fun, most impressive, most grin-filled show. With BRENT FORRESTER inspiring us, STEVE HELY cracking us up and reminding us of importance of finishing projects, and SASHEER ZAMATA letting us in on productivity secrets and telling us exactly how important she thinks a dead fish’ resting place is. Sunday was a SOLD OUT Let’s Go Atsuko! The one-year Dynaversary of Workjuice was appropriately festive, we even got a dang cake (aw!) and handed out lil’ coffee cakes to our audience (coffee because, “work juice”.)  We got to live a real Oprah moment by taping a few coffee cakes under peoples chairs to surprise them! (WHO WANTS.... COFFEE CAKE?!?) Here’s to many more Oprah moments! May the ones in the future come with more money, cocker spaniels, and real estate in wine country. Thursday and Friday we welcomed in the Wine & Crime podcast and… if there’s one thing those true-crime heads love more than a gruesome story of murder and mayhem it’s... guzzling wine. They officially win for most raucous (but still lovely) crowd, which we honestly didn’t see coming! Gotta love a sleeper hit. Wino Crimos, we salute your gusto, but we do not envy the hangovers you must’ve had.  Saturday we had another beach blanket DYNGO Dynasty Tonight! The DYNGO winners walked home with some TRUUUULY fabulous prizes (The Sopranos Season 5 DVD Set, leftover COFFEE CAKE, cancelled Comedy Central show tumblers, and a grand prize courtesy of Monsieur Lindt) but not before winners were subject to the insult wrath of our new smash hit character, THE DYNGO DINGO! (Jamie bailed on the insults when a Martial Arts guy won.) Hello sweet darlings!  Last newsie of July! HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE!? Time, she gallops fast’r than the finest steed in our cavalry! Last week was an o’er flowing cornucopia of blessings. Raise your glass (if applicable) as we recount them!  Dynasty was a HOUSE OF ICONS! On Friday we were graced by Grace herself, JANE FONDA in a special event put on by one of our favorite non-profits (and neighbors!) GET LIT. Our buddy SAM CURTIS interviewed JANE about her career and her artistic approach. She is as amazing, intelligent, driven, and yes  as you’d hope. And on Saturday we hosted producer/showrunner/writer/super nice guy, BRUCE FERBER’s book release for his new book about the ins and outs of Hollywood, The Way We Work, and he brought with him a slew of incredibly talented folks, including JASON ALEXANDER. Hewas ALSO all the good things!  The past week we also had the pleasure of an encore performance of DREW DROEGE’s Happy Birthday Doug, which is now headed off Broadway! Drew is a megastar and we’re grateful for any time he, and the other characters that live in his brain, grace our stage. Everything’s Great was sold out, and everything was super DUPER great. BECK BENNETT sang some ditties and *HOT GOSS* told us that ADAM SANDLER was recently praising Dynasty on the set of SNL! DEMI ADEJUYIGBE was missing under suspicious circumstances! ADDIE WEYRICH is not just a comedic joy bomb, she’s also a BLACK BELT and she proved it! (First karate on stage! Unlikely practitioner!) Saturday night’s Dynasty Tonight! was delightful- MOSHE KASHER and NATASHA LEGGERO offered up couple’s counseling! (MOSHE also debuted a scary story about a judgmental Uber driver!) We swooned for SANDY HONIG! She crooned for us! SABRINA JALEES’ closed out the night with a killer set and proceeds went to support the heroes at RAICES! On Sunday we went on our first full staff excursion and it was a dang  delight ! We went to another venue that knows a thing or two about fog use, enchantment, and utensil-free dining. Yes, we stormed MEDIEVAL TIMES! We slurped soup, waved flags, and cheered for our knight (red and yellow for life)! It was a true Dyna-fam fun day, and got us even more excited than usual about our mission to enjoy the joy and absurdity of life. We came back with bellies full of ol' timey grub, our minds full of new Dynnovations, and each of us with a souvenir picture (Jamie insisted we upgrade to the Queen’s Royalty package 🤷‍♀️ ) that we’ll treasure forever.  And now, for now. TONIGHT!   It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas    …. in July. At 8pm it’s Deck the Hallmark Podcast, live: Christmas in July! The guys from the amazing, hilarious, Hallmark-movie central podcast will be reviewing A December Bride, and hosting a Q & A afterwards.  WEDNESDAY we’re celebrating, baby! Hieee Darlings! How are you? Hope you've been having a super fun summer full of surfing and SPF-loaded tanning opportunities. OpperTANities: yet another solid-gold business idea we simply haven’t had the bandwidth to pursue. Hey Beach Blanket Baby-Darlings,  Well, if you wish for summer long enough, THIS happens. (It's getting hot here in Los Angeles.) 🤷‍♀️ 🥵 But let’s talk about happy things, like shows at Dynasty in the comfort of the always crankin’ A/C. Ahhhh. We kept it cool last week with some truly exceptional shows. ROSE ABDOO was as delightful as she herself is (and she is VERY delightful.) HANNAH GADBSY’s return of DOUGLAS was a triumph; her show was amazing at its debut in March and has only gotten more polished and insightful and funny... which we honestly wouldn’t have thought necessary. She’s very talented. It’s a bit much! Like, the perfect amount of much. ELIOT GLAZER’s Haunting Renditions gave us allll that bad music and made it sooooo good. CECILY STRONG turned up and turned out in early aughts fashion with a gorgeous duet of “I’m Real” that somehow elevated the J.Lo / Ja Rule masterpiece. JEN KIRKMAN talked about the good ol’ days, JACKIE TOHN talked about her good ol' days on American Idol and performed an acoustic version of “Baby Got Back” that made us love- nay, ADORE, big butts. AGAIN. In shattering news, “Bugaboo” isn't the timeless ballad we thought it was.  Saturday’s DYNASTY TONIGHT was a gem - the whole line-up was wonderful, the DynaPop flowed like liquid popcorn, and we had a magician (BEN SEIDMAN) who made us remember, as magicians always do, “Dang, magic is fun.” Sunday’s FETAL POSITION show marked the first of many times that the theater entrance will be transformed into an elegant vagina. SHELLY SLOCUM delivered a hell of a show that was equal parts informative, hilarious, gross, not at all gross, and really good in all the ways. JAMIE DENBO gave a diatribe on pads we’ll never forget, KAY CANNON regaled us with a cautionary tale of pain-management, and RACHEL BLOOM sang a beautiful ballad (rightfully) accusing God of not understanding women's bodies. All that annnnnd the proceeds went to Planned Parenthood! Great people putting on great shows to do great things… kinda the best.  THIS WEEK we’re up to our usual theater-based mischief. TOMORROW join us for TAYLOR TOMLINSON! THURSDAY it’s LINDSAY AMES’ show baby, the hilarious and exposing My Diary with diary readings from RHEA BUTCHER, JOHN HENNIGAN  and more. FRIDAY we welcome BRENDAN SCANNELL (The Cure with Joel Kim Booster, NETFLIX’ Bonding)  for his solo show I Promise This Will Be Cute! If he promises, we believvvve honey. SATURDAY it’s our hometown honeys show, Dynasty Tonight! This week, BEACH BLANKET DYNGO edition! Come on down for some indoor, air-conditioned, good ol’ fashioned summer fun! The line-up will be top notch (FAHIM ANWAR and SASHEER ZAMATA confirmed so far), the surprises will be surprising, and the Dyngo (Dynasty Bingo) will be dusted off and ready for some action.    In life-news, we had the pleasure of using the theater as our private movie theater this weekend for both Jamie and Vanessa’s families. We watched The Princess Bride (it holds up! Except how REALLY mean Wesley [as The Dread Pirate Roberts] is to Buttercup when he’s first reunited with her. He’s vicious and he threatens to hit her! Why is he taking that little charade so far? Is it because he’s so mad she is engaged to Humperdink? If so, he’s got some major jealousy issues he needs to work through before he’s ready for an adult relationship.) It was such a special afternoon, and seeing the theater full of our families ranging from ages two and a half weeks to ninety three years was pretty darn magical.  Thank you all for becoming our ever-growing Dynasty family. We’ll screen movies for you, too! Dearest Darlings,  Happy post-long weekend! We hope it was a time of recharging and rejuvenating and enjoying your life. We also hope every day is a day of enjoying your life! Whenever you’re really not enjoying your life, take a pause and try to see if you can (legally) eliminate the not good thing, and if you can, DO! And if you can’t, look the not good thing squarely in the face (or approximate face) and say, “I see you. I accept you. Let’s try to find our way through this, compadre.” And that’s your dose of Dynasty wisdom for the day. YOU'RE WELCOME! We had a lovely little break, with the dark nights at the theater affording us some time to get cozy with loved ones and season 3 of Stranger Things. Saturday’s GO DAY was a gosh darn dream, we laughed,  we learned about delicious CBD chocolates from the founder of Calivolve! BARRY & JASON started a month-long creative accountability buddy group tentatively titled the Bud-Holes! SHELLY SLOCUM talked about the patriarchy (RELAX, men! You’re safe!) and got us VERY excited for her upcoming show with RACHEL BLOOM and KAY CANNON and more, JAMIE talked about his time in Big Sur and shared a powerpoint he made that included some truly inspiring transitions and text effects (who knew words could UNDULATE?!) AND it was BABY FRANCIE's first time on the Dynasty stage. She accompanied Vanessa for the whole event and was the picture of poise and grace (and intense slumber.) Saturday night’s Dynasty Tonight featured some of our favorite performers making us feel our favorite things (happy! enchanted! excited!) including KEVIN NEALON killing it as per usual, FELICIA FOLKES serving up auntie-vibes that belie her youth, PAM SEVERNS doing the coziest burlesque we’ve ever seen, and RON FUNCHES giving us forty minutes of heaven. Yesterday we got our adrenaline spiked (we are total adrenaline junkies as long as the adrenaline can be procured in a safe, quiet, seated position) by announcing ONLY to our mailing list (that’s you!) that HANNAH GADSBY would be returning to the Dynasty this week! We sent the email and watched the clock, within minutes her show was totally sold out (and we were getting emails wondering why tickets said “unavailable.” Because they sold, darlings! They sold SO FAST. We’ve got some lightning-fingers on our list!)  ANYWAY!  THURSDAY we have two powerhouses in the house, which we consider a powerhouse, making this a POWERHOUSE NIGHT to the THIRD POWER (Powerhouse Night ^3, or “PHN cubed™")  First up, ROSE ABDOO (Gypsy from Gilmore girls! A real star from STARS HOLLOW IS COMING TO US!) in her solo show, Rose Abdoo & Rose Abdon’t. Then we have the afore mentioned, immediately sold-out HANNAH GADSBY show.  FRIDAY night, house favorite ELIOT GLAZER’s Haunting Renditions: bad music made good. This week Eliot will be joined by JACKIE TOHN (GLOW), CECILY STRONG (SNL), JEN KIRKMAN and ELI BRADEN. Oh, and you know, the ORCHESTRA he brings with him! Don’t miss this show!  SATURDAY, it’s our show of comedy and surprises with a hand-picked lineup and machine-popped corn, Dynasty Tonight! This week’s lineup features host with most, ATSUKO OKATSUKA! The man with the good ol’boy voice but the woke-new boy soul (our description, not his) BILLY WAYNE DAVIS! Plus JAY LARSON and mooooore surprises and delights TBA.  SUNDAY the hilarious, smart and insightful SHELLY SLOCUM returns with her show, THE FETAL POSITON. This show. benefitting Planned Parenthood, promises to be informative and hilarious and attending also has the added bonus of being an act of resistance against everyone that wants women to shut up about their bodies and rights! We LOVE acts of resistance that involve great popcorn and great lineups.
