Go Day — Show Notes

go_dayV3.jpg

Every month, Dynasty Typewriter invites members of our creative community down to the theatre to give talks on what excites and inspires them. This Month’s featured speakers include Catherine Coan — Hybrid Taxidermist, Artist, Poet, Professor, Brent Forrester — Writer + Showrunner (The Simpsons, Love, The Office), Jonathan Kidder — Creator, Artist, Intuitive, Bruce Ferber — Showrunner (Home Improvement, Coach) And was hosted by our artistic directors Vanessa Ragland + Jamie Flam — Artistic Directors (Dynasty Typewriter)

SHOW NOTES

Catherine Coan

a. Collaborate

b. Doesn’t matter how old you are, just get started

c. People like people who are into stuff

4. Jonathan Kidder - Living as a Psychic Bird:

a. It’s cool saying the “Universe”

b. Never underestimate a psychic puppeteer

c. Don’t be afraid to let your magic out – even if it’s scary

d. Root chakra is your connection with your tribe

e. Know your tribe – the people who allow you to be yourself

f. 2nd chakra – sexual center

g. Callings – finding and following an authentic life – book recommendation

h. Heart Chakra

i. “LIKE-ME-ITIS”

j. “Tell the Llama”

k. Throat chakra – every chakra is a power center

l. Manage your choices between the head and the heart

m. Jonathan likes cabernet sauvignon and sauvignon blanc for parties

n. Gratitude is the antidote for fear

o. Before you go to bed, ask yourself: “Why was today the best day ever?”

p. RESOURCES:

· Kidderco.com – his website

b. Never too late to become what you might have been

6. Bruce Ferber @ferberama with Brent Forresster:

a. On “Breaking in” – took time to write – wrote spec scripts – sent out his first spec script

b. Not knowing what you’re doing can be an advantage – don’t compare yourself to

everyone else and “the way it’s done”

c. On TV shows - you’re a mimic when you write on a show – study what they do and sound like them – the only part that is you is the way in which you present the story knowing who the characters are

d. Nowadays – Have 1 original pilot and 1 spec - the market is saturated by original content

– the spec script demonstrates your discipline to work within another writer’s vision and your ability to “meet deadlines”

e. How a person works in a group is vital

f. Q: What if you’re not funny in the room? A: The loudest one isn’t necessarily the funny one

g. (Em’s personal tangent after Brent talked about hanging out next to the “quiet ones” to amplify their suggestions – Wondered if amplifying is what SOME men intend when they repeat your suggestion in meetings – maybe, but then they’d make sure to give you credit if that was the case)

h. The secret of story writing – a story is usually about two people – take two characters and put them at war with each other – arcing it out always helps the story telling

i. Email with 15 minute segments

j. Highly personal storytelling is an effective way to go (Apatow) - Brent wrote a blossom script – so he used his own sibling relationship as the reality in which the scene was rooted.

k. What makes a show hugely successful like "Home Improvement?" - A likable star, originality, and hitting a cultural “moment” just right

l. “A little lox goes a long way”

m. Getting started on your own - “when your’re playing tennis there are two people on the court, the guy hitting the ball and the guy in your head telling you that you suck” – try to remember to not pick on yourself – If you get something down it will get better

o. A lot is discipline and a lot is getting to the point where you like yourself

p. RESOURCES:

· Elevating Overman by Bruce Ferber

· The War of Art (suggested by Brent)

· Zen and the Art of Tennis (from Bruce)

· The Way We Work – On the Job In Hollywood – anthology by Bruce Ferber

7. Brent Forrester:

a. It’s okay to write about things and people you don’t know about – research and write, you must to grow – write journalistically – if you find that courage you can eliminate the competition

b. Always encourage people to make art – as long as you are encouraging them to do it therapeutically – (as if you are in therapy) – and autobiographically

c. Do a vomit pass to overcome a minor block – (Em only - limit your feedback – it may be stopping you – first get some shit on paper)

d. Put together a look book for your show – what is the pilot story in the first episode – write it as a treatment –– 4 or 5 pages of prose treatment is fine, as if you're telling it out loud – you won’t sell anything off a description of the series

e. When you have something personal that you want to share – you’re in the realm of great art

f. Have a friend who’s also a writer for 1) accountability and 2) to remind yourself that what you’re writing about is interesting to other people

g. If you have $200 – you can put on your own show

h. Find a class and do it

i. RESOURCES:

· USC Comedy school?

· In Santa Monica, the UnUrban Café will let you do a one person show

8. Wrap up:

a. The coffee is worth it.

Dynasty Dygest: April 30th

Recaps and previews from the week of April 30th.

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

Darling Buds of (almost) May,

Here’s to the dawn of a new month, and a prayer that rough winds don’t shake you. Or if they DO shake you, may it be in a way that’s really fun and empowering. April has been great, and to prove it we’ll tell you about the last week of April ‘round these parts! Last Tuesday was the one year anniversary of Team Coco’s UP & UP and we were walkin’ up and up on air due to how great the show was. MARIA BAMFORD was the dream we all know her to be, ANDY RICHTER gave a completely candid and unfiltered interview, and MOSES STORM and FLULA BORG reenacted scenes from Cocktail. (They also had us all asking WTF was Cocktail!? How, why, and for whom was that made?! But- in the event of a remake, Moses gets to be Tom and Flula gets to be everyone else.) Wednesday the WorkJuicers worked it so well they should get paid overtime. JOSH GONDLEMAN’s show was further proof that nice AND funny are the most delicious combo. FRIDAY we had the pleasure and thrill of hosting our first AirBnb Experience! (It’s a match made in heaven! We love LA, we love new friends, and you KNOW we love a flarkin’ experience.) We hosted a lovely fashion designer from Shanghai and her friends to a private tour and history lesson, a tamale dinner on stage, a personalized slide show, and then perfect seats for Friday Forty where they witnessed the genius of DAVE HOLMES and SCOTT GIMPLE, delighted in the wit of LUKE NULL, and basked in the goddess beams emanating off of AISHA TYLER. Saturday was the 16mm 90s horror marathon and it’s always a blast when Dynasty transforms into a movie theater! The event was packed from noon to midnight, potlucks were had, popcorn was eaten, screams were screamed, and the 90's were missed. Sunday April 28th shall henceforth be known as JANEANE GAROFALO Appreciation Day, as her show had us appreciating her harder than ever! We’ve always been fans, but watching her do an hour and 10 minutes of amazing, fresh, intelligent, self-aware and reallllly smart work was one of our favorite things to date. ALSO she’s nicer than you can possibly imagine! ALSO ALSO she stole a roll of toilet paper from us (street cred!) and bought a Dynasty T-shirt (sweet cred.) Ain’t love grand?

Oh, and can we take this moment to make a new Dyn'AccessoryCommandment™? Don’t wear jinglebells to shows, folks! We don’t know who the offending fashionista was, but we DO know that every laughter and applause moment was punctuated by a sparkling tinny jingle that made it feel like angels EVERYWHERE were gettin’ wings. Good for angels, bad for brains. Save your ear chimes, wrist rattles, and gong shoes for our next Maxinista Jamboree Dynasty Street Parade (date forthcoming.)

May is kicking of with one heck of a May Day as WEDNESDAY brings us DYNASTY TONIGHT! Dynasty Tonight is a show comprised of hand-picked lineups of favorite darlings that we just know you’ll love. This week we’ve got JOEL KIM BOOSTERJON DALY! BETH STELLINGCANDICE THOMPSON! JOE MANDE! Annnnd a SURPRISE SPECIAL GUEST! (Oooh! Who can it be?! We can’t tell! Someone famous? Yes! Shhh!) Come on down and hang out with us, and see the show we designed with YOU in mind!

FRIDAY and SATURDAY we welcome back the queen CAT COHEN for two sold-out shows of her cabaret (catbaret? sorry!) brand of enchantment. SATURDAY afternoon at 2pm, come on down to another GO DAY! Go Day is our (FREE!) monthly dose of enchantertainment™ for artists, entrepreneurs, or anyone looking for a little extra creative inspiration into their life! Join us as some of our favorite people share their approaches to creativity and productivity! This month we have returning champ, writer and show runner BRENT FORRESTER (The Office, The Simpsons)! Comedian and actor BARON VAUGHN (New Negroes, Grace and Frankie)! Comedian and approachable meditator LAURA HOUSE (How to Hate Yourself)! Business badass JAMIE SULLIVAN (Soylent)! The event will be hosted by our own JAMIE and VANESSA and is, as always, a great excuse to drink a lot of DynaBrew. Also Jamie S. is bringing free Soylent! Have YOU used their cafe flavors as coffee creamers? THEN YOU HAVEN'T LIIIIIVED. Come and connect with the Dynasty Darlings we love so much, and remind yourself of your truly limitless potential. (It’s cheesy but it’s true. You can do anything! Life is absurd! What do you want? Let’s figure out how to make it happen.)

Until next week, don’t let that gold complexion get dimmed!

Event Recap: GO DAY

Go Day

Go Day! is Dynasty Typewriter’s monthly dose of enchantertainment™, designed to excite and inspire you to GO into your life with gusto! It's a free event for our community where we have artists, creators, and entrepreneurs that we like come educate and inspire our audience. This month we had an amazing line-up of speakers including comedian/speaker/change agent Brian Neufang (Even his IMDB is impressive!), Ice Cream Tycoon Laura O’Neill (Van Leeuwen Ice Cream), and Barry McLaughlin (Game Night in a Can). As always, it was hosted by Jamie Flam + Vanessa Ragland (Artistic Directors at Dynasty Typewriter). Sarah Jane Irwin (Irwin Management) was in residence to take notes for this edition.

GO DAY (APRIL 6 RECAP NOTES)

HUMANS MADE THAT!
An elaborately choreographed hula hoop dance video played. It was as if the Rockettes were 80's moms dancing with hula hoops in tight blue leotards. The Revenge of the Nerds' Talent Show broadcasted next, and the hosts said, "Isn't Booger cool? Weren't some of those costumes problematic?" Yeah! HUMANS MADE THAT! It started with an idea, and here it is!

LESSONS LEARNED

Trust your instincts and the power of gratitude! Work on being welcoming, but curate who and what is in your life with solid and fearless boundaries. We feel hurtful when we have boundaries and use them, but we have to move beyond that. When you're nice, you want to give and help others, but if the person you help isn't thankful or doesn't have gratitude, what's your work even for? It would work if a show was doing okay and the people doing it were gracious, but if the show was losing money and the people weren't gracious, why would anyone want to continue that show? Good communication up front is WORTH IT. After the communication, any and all feelings are valid. If relations don't feel good, trust your gut and be as clear as possible upfront. Have no fear! The world needs more "releasers." You don't have to say "yes" when people ask you stuff, and don't expect a "yes" when you ask people stuff. No one is entitled to anything. Release your expectations when helping another or asking for help. Part of doing things is just doing them.

TALES FROM DYNASTY

There once was a one man show with a lot of wigs. Cole Escola, from "At Home with Amy Sedaris," sold out his first show at Dynasty, so he got six shows! It's important to actually see shows and enjoy life because you don't always have to be working. Magic can happen with a little bit of tech! Remember and unpack what made you excited in the first place (like after a show), so you can take it with you in life. An example for me, right now, at Go Day: I want to work here and grow as a comedy manager even though I just made myself a comedy manager by making a website and interviewing managers. I'm excited about comedy, and I take that with me in life and am making it into a career. The takeaway is, say thank you, be genuine, and have a personality in your emails.

INNOVATIONS? MORE LIKE DYNAVATIONS!

Dynasty got excited with their popcorn treatment. They made updates to boring popcorn with new combinations of foods, flavors, and textures by adding various toppings to popcorn: jalapenos, Cheetos, candy, chips, or nutritional yeast. They got excited and got original. They also got magnetic name tags and jars for their popcorn toppings to give Dynasty a more "apothecaric" vibe. They got those things from Amazon at 2 a.m. What can you get on Amazon at 2 a.m?

BE OPEN TO UNLIKELY PEOPLE DOING UNLIKELY THINGS

Eric Raymond is the building manager that Dynasty pays rent to. Eric happened to have new DJ equipment, so he DJ'd a successful show.

HEADLINE NEWS!

You don't have to make a small problem into a sensationalized, catastrophic Trumpian headline.

Man sent kitten GIF to rekindle with an ex! (Jamie's cutesy offer of communication ended in a great relationship).

Theater owner loses sleep while pregnant woman derails day! (Vanessa went to a doctor's appointment on the wrong day after shuffling her schedule around to compensate for it).

Theater owners hide from Psychic Ostrich Man they hired! (The Ostrich Man expects and actively works to get attention. Why else would he be an ostrich man? He worked in a pretty inappropriate way, while a little drunk, by interrupting 2 people's comedy sets at Dynasty.)

BREATHWORK, BABY!
Producer from Loud Village motivation and positivity man, Brian Neufang came up to bat with a happy, "I'm a releaser; Happy Go Day!" Brian uses his creativity to overcome personal blocks by teaching others what he really needed to learn himself. He taught breathwork (one word). Breathing can be conscious, but we do it around 20,000 times a day, so most of it is unconscious. Our bodies are instruments, and our meditation or conscious breathing is our hygiene. We can harness the power of breath and focus on today with breathwork (similar to life force energy, chi, pranayama, or source.) To help PTSD and mental health Brian taught a holotropic breathwork and then a shamanic breathwork for active meditation. Our breathing muscles are attached to our posture muscles, so we did a belly breath for wellbeing. He instructed us to not care what anybody thinks and ask ourselves, "How am I managing my energy? Am I leaking it after stuffing it or am I conscious about how I let it out?" Energy is always in motion and manifests itself as our thoughts or feelings. When you think of something sad or embarrassing that happened to you, the posture is burying your neck with your shoulders touching your ears; you pretty much become a turtle. When I think of my own grief and anxiety, my body posture reflects that in a shy, hunched position, and I never realized it until I heard Brian speak. If I get reminded of suicides or my dad's relapses, my whole body shrinks and stuffs into itself. Brian told us how to train your brain to free your mind, and the only way out is in. Taking time to open up physically will change you emotionally, and he asked, "What do you want more of? What do you want to let go of?" We were instructed to breathe in the rhythm of our body and to hold our tongue behind our teeth to help the energy flow.

*Relaxation breathwork*

Put your judgment hats to the side and sit tall. This breathing will help people get better sleep. Breathe through the nose for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds, and breathe out your mouth for 8 seconds. I used to teach this to new mothers struggling with mental health and addiction issues at my old non-profit back in Alaska, and it really did help them sleep.

*Focusing breathwork*

This trains your nervous system. I usually breathe shallowly, all in my chest, and I'm tired all the time making it hard to focus. Knowing that, I can use this technique by breathing in for 5 seconds, hold your breath for 5 seconds, breathe out for 5 seconds, and hold your breath for another 5 seconds, and repeat. You can do this out your nose or out your mouth.

*Breathwork to take you to space*

This breath helps build confidence and is hypoventilation in forcefully inhaling twice quickly, then relax and melt with an exhale out your mouth quickly, and back to the two short and powerful inhales, all through your mouth, for the duration of a song. This will generate heat, may tingle your fingers, and may change your body to a more alkaline state. We all have the power to create and to be who we want, and Brian asked, "What shift happened during this breathing exercise?” For me, during the whole song, I felt like I couldn't keep the breathing up and I took a few little, regular breath breaks to relax. I was afraid I would pass out, and it says a lot about the amount of fear and anxiety I hold onto. Most people think about life in that we all want to be comfortable. Pushing past that comfort is the only way we'll really change, and I want to try to do that for an entire song without stopping when I’m alone. Brian said the technique helped him stay grounded and that the word inspiration literally means breathing. He encourages us to email him about your experience!

GAME NIGHT IN A CAN AND MORE GAMES AND TIPS

Barry McLaughlin, co-creator of Game Show in a Can said he didn't trust the Cheetos in the popcorn Dynavation because Cheetos are too corporate. Jamie agreed, "Go on, be critical; that's how we grow!" Vanessa endorsed the Cheetos with the fact that, "They'll help you go on a crunch journey." Some people in the audience said that they didn't like spicy, but they love crunch of Cheetos in the popcorn. Cheeto tangent aside:

Barry's games got rejected three times, so he changed the packaging and made a 60 second video for Barnes & Noble in hopes of selling his games there. He learned how to edit from, "Editing for Dummies,” YouTube videos, and a pirated editing software (that pays for). He preached to market yourself in memorable ways, and how Lyft drivers always have ideas for his games (that he actually appreciates hearing). One Lyft driver was adamant about a comic book trivia game about superhero's names. He’d ask, what hero name, alter ego name, and actor names are from each hero. Barry wanted to invent games to inspire creativity rather than playing games within the rules and bounds of other people's creativity (or names?). With the example of cards against humanity, we're limited to their choices of funny cards to insert; Barry would want to see a cards against humanity type game where you put your own choices to fill in the blanks so you get to invent what's funny. He did a Kickstarter for his first game and raised $20,000. After that, he was able to call factories to figure out how he was going to get games to all of his backers. Then, he got profitable and shared his three hot tips for fun and profit.

*Tip numero uno*

Have nuggets of personality, because you're always pitching (insert baseball joke)! He wore a shiny blue jacket with a metal around his neck that didn't look completely wacky but just different enough to be noticeable. His persona was building a planet that he wanted people to visit (just because). He also gave people medals when they bought his games, and once, while he was putting a metal over a woman's head with thick braids while a song played, he couldn't get the metal over her hair (super awkward). After that, he just handed them out. He made personal videos like the Barnes & Noble one that highlighted that he cared about and wanted to work with that company, so in his video, he inserted his own product in their stores and made a commercial-like video stating, “Hey B&N, we like you!”

*Tip numero dos*

Make friends with everyone and offer your talents for free (to the right friends of course). He noted being memorable and being funny helps. He offered his services of hosting a paper airplane contest to a toy association convention, and people remembered his service and thought it was funny. Those people mentioned to women from Viacom that he made games, and those women went back to him and said, "You're welcome to any of our Viacom property to make a game out of." He picked Anchorman, and they're working on an Anchorman-themed game that inspires creativity now. That golden opportunity wouldn’t have presented itself if he wasn’t “offering his talents for free to the right people.”

*Tip numero tres*

Get organized so you can be your best creative self to do your creative stuff; be ready for opportunity as soon as it comes!

THE PRETTY DETAILS OF VAN LEEUWEN ICE CREAM

Laura O'Neill started from a one page business plan with a cute ice cream truck with as much attention to detail and design as Dynasty: Van Leeuwen Ice Cream! They just open their 16th store and are about to open 6 more before summer ends in places like Rockefeller Plaza (and in LA, NY, and NJ.) Starting out, she looked for a lease by asking, "How much is the shortest amount of time can I lease this for?" Now and she looks at leasing for the long-term asking, "Can I have this for 20 years?" She started with well made, simple ingredient ice cream. Her background is event production, and said you can really do anything with enthusiasm, hard work, design, and friends. VL started with friends and credit line of $60,000 and opened the first small fleet of ice cream trucks. She realized people wanted chunks rather than the simple flavors they started with. Even their Instagram had a clean and beautiful detail which attracted the attention of Pentagram Design. Pentagram asked VL what they could spend on design, Laura said what she could spend, and Pentagram agreed. VL started with 3 employees and now they have 200+ and focus on keeping employees matched well with their culture by treating them respectfully, nicely, and transparently (esp. about their struggles with customer service). Laura shared how are the "King of Coffee" slashed the VL truck's tires because they were selling $4 lattes while the King sold cheap, plain cups of coffee. VL was transparent about their struggles with seasonal products even though of course we could eat their ice cream year-round. For them, it was important to have an alternative to a bar that people can hang late at, so some of VL's stores are open until 2 a.m. while each customer gets the best treatment. VL lets guests try as many flavors as they want and focuses on having their employees be present with each guest. VL wanted to save people from mediocre ice cream and even have quality vegan ice cream that's not just an afterthought. VL puts just as much intention and variety into the vegan flavors, making sure they have chunks of candy/dough/chips/etc. because, "People love chunks!" It's true, even at Dynasty with their popcorn with added chunks of greatness, people do love chunks. VL was inspiration in action as Dynasty bought a special freezer to sell VL ice cream with the inaugural ice cream party after Go Day! I wish I didn't have to run out; I was literally buzzing with inspiration and excitement after seeing successful people explain how their ideas became physical things. Thank you!

Summary:

No need to stress over inconveniences or the unknown; you can’t control an ostrich man’s disruptive interruptions, but you can hide from him; breathing can take you to space and change your life; make a video of what you’d like to see, and send it to who you’d like to be seen with; ice cream is better when the ingredients and design are simple; and of course, people love chunks!

Oh Darlins,

Sharpen your horns and get ready for some bull, cause it’s Taurus season, hunnnnnies, and we’re ready to charge into it with gusto. Last week was as lovely and varied as a spring bouquet ‘round these parts. Hosting our first JFL Showcase was a treat, and we got were introduced to some amazing new talent, poutine it all on the line for their comedy career! (Not exactly but we are REQUIRED by law to make a poutine joke and this felt more than passable.)  WHO WILL WIN AND GO TO MONTREAL? We have no idea and have nothing to do with that, but we’re rooting for everyone…. especially our favorites. Who we can’t name but we can wink about ;) ;) ;) We also had the full-on pleasure of seeing TOM KENNY & The Hi-Seas LIVE at the fabulous DANA GOULD Hour! What a thrill! Tom Kenny is every bit the charming and electric showman you’d hope for, AND he brought THREE flarkin' flautists. (Yes! We’re bragging!)  Friday got trippy with SHANE MAUSS’s science talk about MDMA and then ANNE LANE’s Variety Hour which provided the theater’s first opportunity to clean up fish guts. (It took the LA Philharmonic 14 years to claim this important milesetone, so we're well on our way to something.) Saturday we put on a train themed Dynasty Tonight for the ages, complete with a be-kerchiefed and engineer-hatted staff, railway soundscapes, a killer lineup and THE PIGMAN presenting a cathartic round of PIG WHACK.

Now, Passover has passed (as far as Jamie knows) and Easter has risen (as far as Vanessa knows) and here we are with a week of spring flings for ya! TONIGHT we are so excited to celebrate the one year anniversary (the paper anniversary!) of TEAM COCO’s UP & UP! We’re so grateful for a year of wonderful shows with this team. How are they celebrating? With this ridiculous line-up: the marvelous and unfairly good looking host MOSES STORM! MARIA BAMFORD! ANDY RICHTER! FLULA BORG! JAMES ADOMIAN! ADAM CAYTON-HOLLAND! VIR DAS! The band STRANGE HOTELS! Sheeesh! That’s how ya do it! Come on down!

WEDNESDAY is our favorite midweek treat, WORKJUICE WEDNESDAY! It’s improv from the cast of the legendary Thrilling Adventure Hour. You never know what they’re gonna do next! And if you do, then you’re psychic and should monetize that! Or not, if that makes you feel weird. This week's cast includes JANET VARNEY, ANNIE SAVAGE, HAL LUBLIN, MARK GAGLIARDI, and special guest monologist, JAMES URBANIAK!

THURSDAY we’re so happy to have the sweetiest sweetie that ever sweetied, JOSH GONDELMAN for his Dancing on a Weeknight album release! He’s gonna tell jokes, and so are his friends. Friends like DANIELLE PEREZRHEA BUTCHERCHRIS GARCIA and more! And then at 10pm, it’ll be verrrry spoooooky with Ghost Town Podcast live! (About the dead!) Join hosts REBECCA LEIB and JASON HORTON and have some fun gettin’ creeped.

FRIDAY we’ve got the Friday 40 with DAVE HOLMES and SCOTT GIMPLE featuring special guests AISHA TYLER and LUKE NULLSATURDAY the folks from Voyager Institute, Friday Night Frights, and Secret 16 present 90s NIGHTMARES: A 16mm Horror Film Marathon!  The lineup is a secret! The genre and time frame and way of presenting are NOT. Come join the terrifying fun! SUNDAY it's time to bask in the glory of JANEANE GAROFALO! She’s been a feature in some of our favorite films, a shining gem on some of the best shows, and now she’s going to be at at the Dynasty. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? If you can’t, remember, seeing is believing. So come, see, believe.

Knick-knack piggywhack,

Jamie & Vanessa

Dynasty Dygest: April 16th

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

Darlings,

Where does the time go? DOES it go? Or are we just all spinning within our own concepts of time, recycling days and interactions until our “life” on this plane ends. Anycheewwwwww, we had a great week regardless of which idea of time you subscribe to, kicked off by one of our favorite Dynasty Tonight’s to date! CHELSEA PERETTI lit up the stage (with our lantern no less!) DREW DROEGE is the best friend we all want, FORTUNE FEIMSTER made power moves without her shoulder pads, it was perfect start to finish, and we sat in the back row and basked in how great people are. And DynaPop. The BYRON BOWERS Experience brought us into Byron’s world, complete with crickets and stars and mushrooms and parents with very liberal approaches to family albums. Thursday we had the pleasure of getting to know author, idea-man, and drive-in movie owner, JOSH FRANK at his book release party for Giraffes on Horseback Salad. We found out exactly how one completes a lost Marx Brothers & Dali film, turns it into a book, and scores and illustrates it. (It involves TIM HEIDECKER, tons of excitement, patience, collaboration, and a Japan-based big band.) The evening was completed by reading a few of the scenes with a sur’reallly dreamy cast! The SKLAR BROTHERS were born to play the Marx Brothers, DAVE FOLEY is guilty of being a delightfully confounded judge, and indignant looks really good on KATE MICUCCI. Saturday was powered by women and it was powerfullll, honeys (who run the world?)! With CAMERON ESPOSITO’s hour and Wild Horses with special guest ANGELA TRIMBUR, twas an embarrassment of riches.

This week we’ve got something new, something true, something “woo!,” and something “spoo”ky for you! (Listen, we know that sentence isn’t great, but writing these every week gets tedious and sometimes we just try to have something FUN!) TONIGHT come and see the funniest faces of the future, TODAY! We’re excited to host a JFL New Faces Showcase, so come by and see LA's next batch of hilarity makers before they blow up and are known as THE FUNNIEST PEOPLE ON THE EARTH PLANET. WEDNESDAY we’re gonna get realllll personal with MO COLLINS, BEN GLEIB, BRANDON WARDELL, LIZZY COOPERMAN and of course, LINDSAY AMES in her show My Diary.

THURSDAY we’ve got the legendary DANA GOULD in the house with his legendary podcast The Dana Gould Hour LIVE! If that wasn’t enough to shoo you from the crannies of your home: 1) Shame on you! 2) Here’s more bait; he’s bringing along EDDIE PEPITONE, BLAINE CAPTACH, JOHN ENNIS annnnnd music by Spongebob’s own TOM KENNY with his band Tom Kenny and the Hi-Seas

This FRIDAY (as all Friday’s should be) is about gettin’ weiiiiird, baby! At 8pm we have Stand Up Science with SHANE MAUSS! It’s the perfect excuse to learn and or laugh, whichever you need an excuse for, though let it be known we thing BOTH of these actions are completely beyond reproach) as comedian Shane Mauss pivots between TED-type talks from real scientists, and comedian-type sets from real comedians! This month the scientists are going to be speaking on MDMA (Street name MOLLY! Pretty vanilla street name, huh? It’s like if heroin’s street name was Gennifer. Maybe it is!? We are not and have never sold ourselves as drug culture aficionados! No offense of course to the fine people who do stand on that platform.)  At 10pm we are thrilled to have The Strange and Unusual Variety Hour for the Recently Deceased from the brilliant mind of ANNE LANE (Rick and Morty staff writer! UCB Outside Dog darling! Groundlings alum! PERSONAL FRIEND!) so come on down to the already spooky and presumed haunted theater to see comedy, music, tricks, demonic possessions and macabre delights of all types! Hosted by Anne as LYDIA DEETZ and flanked by the talents of MATT COOK, NATALIE PALIMIDES, STEVE LITTLE, MITCH SILPA and more! Juggling! Burlesque! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!?

SATURDAY is 4/20! And you know what THAT means! (Wait, maybe we ARE drug culture aficionados?!) It means it’s April 20th and that date turned into numbers is all about…. doobies. We have a show for you that will get you feeling high on life, regardless of where and how you procure that high. Engine 420, hosted by a REAL* train engineer, is a variety show that’ll make you go “oohhhh yeah, man.” Featuring the talents of JACQUELINE NOVAK, BRENT WEINBACH, CHRIS LAKER, MATT MCCARTHY, and more TBA!

SUNDAY in some cultures is Easter. In some cultures it is just Sunday. In ALL cultures it marks the day before the time when Cadbury Creme eggs are at their absolute cheapest. We hope you have a great day full of the meaning you want it to have

Love & Other Drugs,

Jamie and Vanessa

Dynasy Dygest — April 9th

pssst, come on in! We won’t tell anybody!

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

Sweet darlings,

There are tears in our eyes we’re so happy to be writing you! Either that or (perhaps more likely) it's allergy season. Either way, it’s always a pleasure to correspond with you: the life-force of the theater. Last week was a great week here, with a dynamite Dynasty Tonight (Riddle: What do SARAH SILVERMAN, KATE BERLANT, JOHN EARLY, FELICIA FOLKES and KYLE DUNNIGAN all have in common? Ans: They are all, like, really funny. ) And then we had the extreeeeeme pleasure of a COLE ESCOLA run! We hadn’t seen Cole’s show, and as we sat in the back and watched his first performance in the theater we were so inspired and happy and excited for all the folks who had tickets to his six sold-out performances, and so happy that the Dynasty has become a place for artists to do such delightful things.

VERDICT: Cole Escola, “QUICK, PRETEND I’M ASLEEP” VOTED *5 TREATED DynaPops™*. 🍿🍿 🍿 🍿 🍿

Saturday we had a great GO DAY (mark your calendars! Next go day is May 4th! It's all, "May the fourth be with you!" Right #starnerds!? lol) and spent the morning in the folds of the Dynasty learning: breathing techniques (we felt so alive!) from Brian Neufang, how to create personality nuggets (we felt so unique!) from Barry McLaughlin, and eating FREE TOP QUALITY ICE CREAM  (we felt so flarkin' HAPPY) from inspirational Van Leeuwen co-founder, Laura O'Neill.

This week, we’ve got a heckuva platter of delights for you! TONIGHT is DYNASTY TONIGHT with CHELSEA PERETTI, FORTUNE FEIMSTER, DREW DROEGE, FAHIM ANWAR, FELICIA FOLKES, DANNY JOLLES and generous sides of DynaPop & LaCroix for our LaCroinisseurs™. WEDNESDAY we are pleased to present the BYRON BOWERS EXPERIENCE featuring one of our favorite voices, the eponymous BYRON BOWERS and a lineup of hot thangs including: DEWAYNE PERKINS, EMMA WILLMANN, QUINTA BRUNSON, MITRA JOUHARI and MORE! Get your tickets and soak up all the coooool. THURSDAY we’re so excited to have TIM HEIDECKER, DAVE FOLEY and the SKLAR BROTHERS over for JOSH FRANK’s A Night At The Surrealists, a celebration of his new book Giraffes on Horseback Salad

SATURDAY It’s a very CAMERON ESPOSITO Dynasty Tonight at 7pm followed by Wild Horses with the fabulous fillies STEPHANIE ALLYNNE, MARY HOLLAND, LAUREN LAPKUS, and ERIN WHITEHEAD joined by the comedian/actor/dancer pure-inspiration in a human form, ANGELA TRIMBUR

Come to all the shows! Wear outfits that make you feel good! Live with a type of moderation that embraces your choices; from the most modest to the most lavish!

Ineffably yours,

Dynasty,

Tuesday, April 9th | 8pm

Oh, hello! We didn’t see you there. Welcome to a new blurbtion™in which we let you know ways in which we’ve been incrementally improving the Dynasty experience! As Flarnege Dynasty always said, “Change incrementally to expand exponentially!”

DYNAPOP BOLD! DynaPop just got hotter for the summer! We’ve taken some of our favvvvorite spicy-niceys, (chili lime kettle chips! Flamin’ hot Cheetos! Secret ingredient!) crushed 'em up, and gotten 'em ready to take your popcorn to the next HOT LEVEL! 🥵 Next time you pop…. GO BOLD !

CALL ME BY MY NAMEtag: You know when you’ve interacted with someone a few times and you like them and you feel like you should know their name but you don’t and now it’s too late to ask because you already sort of KNOW each other, and asking for a name is an admission of what might be your own social negligence. We don’t, we’re perfect. But for everyone else’s benefit, we’ve now gotten NAMETAGS for our staff! Now you can casually glance at the name tag, load the name, and say it as if you always knew it. Like the Good Lord intended. ALL HAIL HER!

SECOND SHOW ADDED FOR CAT COHEN

Join us for a Dynasty Tonight like none other! ALL ABOARD! We’re transforming the Dynasty from your favorite theater to your favorite runaway train themed partyscape. Whether you’re a toker, smoker, or a straight edge joker, we’ll have something for you. It’s the date night you need! The single night you deserve! The group party you don’t have to plan. Your conductor will guide your experience on Engine 420, on and off the rails!
