Photo Recap: Michael Ausiello’s Beverly Hills

Back in the '80s, when Michael Ausiello was a closeted gay teen living in small-town New Jersey, he penned 517 episodes of a daytime soap opera titled "Beverly Hills." Miraculously, he saved every handwritten script. Now, four decades later, some of the biggest names in comedy came together to perform a 60-minute reading of a self-contained story arc that found six of "Beverly Hills'" most popular characters traveling overseas for a life-or-death adventure. Although some of Teenage Michael’s atrocious spelling was cleaned up for this theatrical experience, the scenes were performed exactly as they were written nearly 40 years ago— for better or worse. Thanks to all the amazing cast who came together to make this event happen: Caitlin Reilly, Tony Hale, Dulé Hill, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash, Melissa Fumero, Mitch Silpa, Patrick Gallagher, Sarah Ramos, Tony Rodrigues, Tristan Michael Brown. Sweet Summer Darlings,

As things develop across the country and world that could only be described as "UH-OH!" we are reminded why we opened our venue here in Los Angeles: Escape, baby! At least temporary escape! As we tell our staff, as soon as anyone walks through the doors of Dynasty (note to self, "The Doors of Dynasty" needs to be something), they should be able to leave their every day behind them and enter our realm of enchantment where everyone is like SO KIND. That goes for them, our lovely audience, and the wonderful talent that we host on our stage. Even the delivery drivers should feel like they are entering a magical space as they leave boxes of popcorn, hot Dynasty merch, and sometimes rat bones. To that end we are nice and generally offer them water. MONDAY, 7/15, 7:30PM: DAVE AHDOOT: Ethnically Ambiguous

DAVE AHDOOT’S enigmatic shade of brown has helped him land parts in over 40 TV ads for huge brands like Ford and McDonald’s. In this high-energy solo show set to debut at Edinburgh Fringe this summer, Dave presses play on his biggest TV milestones, including his very first speaking part and the ad he’s still mocked for today. Follow Dave on his humbling journey from “token ethnic guy with no lines” to “token ethnic guy who just might have been hired for his talent”.

Dave Ahdoot has appeared as a frequent guest on The Tonight Show, and has performed at over 300 universities across the country. He recently executive produced, wrote and starred in the NBC Digital series Dave and Ethan: Lovemakers, which Vulture hailed as “brutally awkward and hilarious”. He was also a writer on HBO’s Emmy-nominated Night of Too Many Stars, hosted by Jon Stewart. He currently is recurring on the TBS/Roku series Chad.

Dealing with the recent loss of her mother and her own social media-fueled mania, Chloe discovers the unexpected potential for opportunity when her blue collar father Geoff gets a job at 30 Rock — as a security guard.

Dearest Dynasty Darlings (Da OG Triple D!),

Let's go ahead and start this weekly transmission with a FUN FACT: You (yes, you!) have the infinite wisdom of the entire universe in every cell of your body. Isn't that rad?? Yes, even on a Monday! Maybe even especially on a Monday? Sure, ok! This is something we remind ourselves over here at DTHQ several times a day, generally after bouts of angst or self doubt regarding our [path in life/mortifying past/mortifying future/bodies/etc] or [state of the city/state/country/world]. Or even other stuff! In any case, it's helpful to be reminded of a more magical, enchanting frequency, even if it's difficult to access a lot of the time. If this doesn't resonate or you prefer to wallow, we get it! Let's take a moment to connect on a BATSHIT FACT: Between 7pm and 3am on July 4th/5th, Angelenos set off a world record 18 TRILLION consecutive fireworks! This has been VERIFIED by everyone we've spoken to about it. Do you live in another city that you think may have eclipsed this number? Email us to provoke a fictional firework statistics-off!

In other news, with VAN(essa) representing on the East Coast for a little bit (is Virginia considered the East Coast? Sound off in the comments!), JAM(ie) had to find a suitable co-host for Dynasty Tonight! this past Saturday. A tall task indeed to find a human who could meet the ferocious talent of V, but luckily there was another V in the house: Vikki Flam aka Jamie's mom! As a Dynasty Tonight! regular, Vikki was able to summons Vanessa's spirit, kicking out the bad stuff, giving away prizes, and introducing the house band The Dynasties, much to the wonderful audience's delight! We all learned the hard way that Vikki is a CAPRICORN, not an AQUARIUS as Jamie told Sammy Twelvefingers to announce at the top of the show. Never been to a Dynasty Tonight! before and curious about words like "kicking out the bad stuff" and "Sammy Twelvefingers?" Well there's another one THIS SATURDAY, and hell, you should come on down and see it for yourself!

LOW TICKET WARNING NEVER LET GO is a “feat of ingenuity” (NY Times). This uproariously queer one-man show takes you back to the Ship of Dreams. It distills the three-plus hour epic and packs into one hour a surprisingly subversive punch. Kinnan, who grew up worshiping the movie and its iconic cast of characters, plays all of them with “perfectly executed comedy, pathos and homage” (ScotsGay Arts). As told by Rose, the play takes you on an intimate journey into the fateful romance that is shadowed by one of the most devastating man-made disasters of modern history – the sinking of the Titanic. NEVER LET GO is “a truly unique and absorbing high camp theatrical piece” (Culture Fix).

‍♂️ TUESDAY, 7/2, 7:00PM: The Benson Movie Interruption: Your Choice is a show where comedian Doug Benson (SUPER HIGH ME, @midnight) invites some of his comedy friends to sit in the front row of the theater with mics, cracking wise during a screening of a movie that YOU choose. That’s right, audience members are encouraged to bring a dvd/blu ray of a film they would like to see ripped apart (lovingly) and a vote will be held to determine which one we watch.

Danthony & Friends is a pop music odyssey about time, self, society, and perception — stuffed with psychedelic absurdity, philosophy, puppets, and unreasonably catchy bangers that will burrow into your mind and likely haunt you forever. All of this in a whimsical cartoon world. It’s maximum absurdity, high production jank that’s way more fun and far better than it has any business being.

DANTHONY is a musician, philosopher and performance artist. Is he a Grammy-nominated and 3x gold-record-earning engineer and songwriter with over 20 million streams and climbing? Yes. Hey pretty Darlings,

Hope you’re able to scrape yer sticky self off the floor and give this a brief read. It’s flarpin’ HOT here in LA and we’re just human puddles scootin’ from one zone to the next. You know what’s the best way to BEAT said heat? AIR CONDISH. Something we are proud to say we have at the theater! AC really pairs best with entertainment, so in ADDITION to a temperature controlled environment, we’ve gone to great lengths to have the stage filled with some of the most amazing performers on the planet puttin’ on shows for you. Life updates: the squirrel won, and the ravaged corn has been pulled from Van’s yard. Personal updates: Jamie’s post-plant medicine journey glow has only slightly begun to dim, and we have stupid drivers and the heat to thank for that. Yeah, we said it, STUPID drivers. THE GALE is an entirely improvised comedy show that premiered on the Groundlings stage in 2015 and has been sailing (I’m sorry) out performances ever since. Created by Chris Eckert, The GALE features some of the best and funniest queer (or LGBTQ) improvisational actors in the United States. Every so often, we get together and celebrate all the joyously queer things about the world. Why then, you might ask, do we title our show after a sometimes destructive weather pattern?

…Because queer folk have historically disrupted the normal ‘patterns’ of society, and often for the better. Be it Leonardo DaVinci or RuPaul, Martha P. Johnson or Harvey Milk, Barbara Gittings or Pedro Zamora, we’re constantly breaking through glass ceilings and using the shards to create intricate chandeliers of change, lighting the way for the next generation.

That was way too many metaphors. But you get it.

A LIVE reading of the original Phantom Menace screenplay, with a wizard cast including some of the galaxy’s hottest stars (…and some surprises?!).

25 years ago, visionary filmmaker George Lucas showed us an astonishing world of podracing, Midichlorians, and battle droids, and we celebrated! On May 19th at Dynasty Typewriter, the guys behind Star Wars Minute and The George Lucas Talk Show were proud to present a LIVE reading of the original Phantom Menace screenplay, with a wizard cast including some of the galaxy’s hottest stars (…and some surprises?!).

The event was hosted by Pete The Retailer, Alex Robinson, and Patrick Cotnoir, featuring special guests Tawny Newsome, Haley Joel Osment, Diana Lee Inosanto, Laraine Newman, Eric Bauza, Vic Michaelis, Tony Hale, Krystina Arielle, Bobby Moynihan, Corin Wells, Mark McConville, Hal Lublin, Matt Gourley, and James Bladon. Musical accompaniment was provided by Chrysanthe Tan.

Hello there Darlings!

How’s everyone feeling? Great. Us too. (We’re sure we agree with the myriad of responses this question could garner. We are usually feeling ALL the things.) Right now, the Jam half (One Mr. Wonderful Jamie Flam) is on a bit of a #spiritualquest. He can fill you in on the details when he returns, but everyone brace yourself for some REVELATIONS! And re-pihanies! We’re all excited to see what revealed itself to him! The VAN half is not on a spiritual quest, but is on a warpath against garden pests. Any hot tips to get rid of powdery mildew and aphids? LET ‘ER KNOW. She’s growing a modest urban cornfield (30 stalks) and the aphids HAVE ARRIVED. The things google suggests are being done, but if you have additional tips, bring them on. Another enemy? THIS FLARPIN’ CONFIDENT-ASS THICC SQUIRREL. He’s eating the strawberries, he’s unphased by Van charging him with a shovel, he’s… making her want to EAT A SQUIRREL which had not been a fantasy prior to this year. Van’s having moderate success encouraging the crows she feeds to divebomb the squirrels, but apparently it’s nesting season so the crows are less attentive right now and the big-tailed rat is taking FULL ADVANTAGE. Whilst the crows’ away the squirrels will prey. Anyway! In more theater related news, we are working on a line of accessories we’re sure you’ll be obsess-oried with.

Hey Dyna-babes,

Happy Pride! Happy June! Happy all the happy things! Life has so many uncomfortable trappings, so ‘round these parts we try to celebrate every ding-dang thing we can. We encourage you do to the same. We’re determined to beat the June gloom with a June BOOM of abundant programming. Yeah, we got a fullll June (“Joon”) and the poster to prove it! It’s a flarpin’ WEEK we got going on, exciting things every night! Big cats on the big screen, a comedy show involving improv and a psychic medium (the real deal: she happened to connect VANessa and her grandma in an incredibly meaningful way ‍), and a special PRIDE edition of Dynasty Tonight!

Now, while we've got your attention... do you have any domestic or world travel recommendations? Like, where are the most enchanting places you've been? If you had a few weeks to go like anywhere, what would be at the top of your list? Is there a specific experience or meal you had that you think of all the time? We'd love to know! Josh’s brain has managed to make him the author and star of hit TV shows (Please Like Me, Everything’s Gonna Be Okay), in this show he tries to work out how to do the small stuff.
